Great captures Daniel.

Do you think those are WallEye?

Great shots Daniel. You are getting to be the master of manual focus.

Sticker shock is a common symptom associated with LBA. Any Pentax * lens, new or old, is going to be expensive. The best always is. I'm a fan of the 200mm focal length for sports such as football, field hockey and soccer. I also use it for indoor shooting in auditoriums where the extra speed is critical. It is manual focus of course and there is no AE but my K 200/2.5 is razor sharp and gets the job done. This was the fastest 200mm Pentax ever made and if you can find one they seem to go in the $500 US range. If money is a factor, and it usually is, this might be an option for you. I even use it for birds from time to time.

Unlikely. But it certainly seems so. There is no way as it was in a small pond of around 40 hectare.

Tom,
Sticker shocks unless you go for manual lenses.

I guess it is all relative Dan. The A* 300 and 200 lenses I have seen go for around $800 to $1,000. Granted I haven't really been looking and you may find one cheaper. That seems a bit steep to me and new DA* lenses are only a few hundred more new at Prodigital.

Thanks, yes I'd definitely consider the K200/2.5 if one ever came up for sale.

I think the most likely final costs in ebay of A300mmF4/A200mmF2.8 are like $4-500 /$ 4-550 respectivley.

For A*300mmF4, it performs the same as M*300mmF4 optics wise.

For long 300mm lens. bokeh for portrait is guaranteed. Here is some bokeh even at F9. But at that FL (even 200mm) camera shake has to be reined in

A perfect candid lens

For the OP, the M*300mmF4 is another good choice at around 10-20% less than the A*300mmF4. Its only limitation is that it cannot do Av. That is it which to most manual shooters is nothing

Currently there is an A* 300/4 on EBAY

Pentax A* 300mm f/4.0 ED Lens 300 f4.0 f4 4 SMC A Star on eBay.ca (item 230376668863 end time 17-Sep-09 19:00:00 EDT)

with an asking price of $799. After taxes, shipping etc there would not be much change left from a $1,000.

Dan, if you can find a *300 or * 200 for the prices you note above let me know.

There's also this A*300 selling on EBay for the princely sum of $1179.
