Silverknight, I believe having a f1,2 and an AF f1,7 of some sort would give you the best setup possible. The f2s are not quite as good, even though they're quite capable. No real need for an f1,4 if you have an f1,2 so you could make some cash this way.

hmm so f1.4>f1.7>FA1.7>FA1.4 @ f1.7/f2 ?? (for sharpness)

I've got a bunch of 50mm's and too need to decide what to keep...

having a f1.2 + f1.7 combo would be ideal?
1.>1.7s' are better than the 1.4 @ f/2 (sharpness)

2.> for me that's ideal. other than that, just have yourself 1 SuperTak 1.4 if you want to get the best of both worlds (sharpness and bokeh) . the only downside is you need to shoot manually.

Great discussion, appreciate the input. Beautiful shots posted as well.

I haven't had a chance to play much, but a did take a couple of test shots (of junk on my desk...which I'm not going to share) and I think I'm keeping both for now. As others have mentioned, the bokeh is better on the FA50...but the f50 looks sharper wide open. I think they'll both have their uses.

I'll play around with it more on the weekend. Won't be making any quick decisions. Again, appreciate everyone's thoughts. Did I mention I love this forum?

Cheers.

I guess it is. I got it for a very, very good price, but it came with a caveat - if I
ever sell it, I have to sell it back to the person who sold it to me! In that way I
guess it's sort of like a magic talisman.

I don't use it very much, as I usually grab the F out of habit.

Here's a wide-open shot from the FA:

Here's f/2 vs. f/8, I don't know, just for the heck of it:

oh - so f1.7 > FA 1.7 > f1.4 > FA1.4 @1.7/2

and lucky for me I have an f1.2 + 1.4 + 1.7 --- decisions!
tempted not to sell anything but there is always the benefit of selling things to fuel more LBA.

Do you mean the any preference to the K / M / A spec of this lens? lol I have 2 of these too...
I just realized I have 7 x 50mm lenses !!! haha. - time to trade up to a 50-135 or something me thinks.

well the F/FA 1.7 are optically identical. the only thing that separates them over the other is the red print for the F. same goes for the 1.4. an exception would be the manual-focus series which are considered lil slightly better. but do you need that very lil difference? it's a trade-off of course when using something with an AF capability and a solely MF lens.

I think you got too many 50's that you don't need. better start selling.

My take

I have 2 F1.7s, one M1.4 and a couple of other prime lenses.

I like the outside look of the Fs. The aperture numbers are engraved. With "matte skin, they look very classy.

The FA version is a bit too shinny on the outside. The construction feels ever slightly cheaper. While my Fs are more noisy focusing, the Fs are slightly better than the FA version in manual focusing.

I prefer my Ms and Ks, when I manual focus. My K10d is perhaps not the best focusing especially in dim light. Since one has to use large apertures, DOV is very shallow. As a result, I use my M quite often.

Image quality wise, they are not much different as far as I can see. Correct focusing is much more important. It is hard to rely on AF to fully utilize the power of the lenses.
