My Latest Lens Hood

Inspired by the DA40 lens hood, I will convert all of my lens hoods to this kind:

It consists of one or more step-down adapter rings. The one in the photo is a 49-37 plus a 37-30.5. A nice thing about 30.5 size is that the lens cap costs nothing:

Sigma 135-400mm: 77-62 + 62-55 + 55-37. Compare the 37mm cap with the original 77mm cap:

Tamron 90mm macro: 55-37 + 37-30.5. Next to the lens is the original lens hood:

Of course this kind of lens hood can't be use with the newer DA zoom lenses (problem with vignetting). But those zoom lenses normally come with dedicated petal-shape hood anyway.

It is great for most full-frame lenses, especially primes. You can reduce the size of the opening until vignetting, then back up one size. I think it provides better protection than any other kind of lens hood.

Prices are very reasonable, as long as you can wait for shipping from China.

That a pretty neat idea. The film canister top is the perfect size? I may have to do this on my M lenses.

I use the final size 30.5mm for all of my 50mm lenses, and my SMC-M 28mm.

I also use that size for my Tamron 90mm macro and my Sigma 50mm macro (55-37 and 37-30.5 step-down adapter rings).

The lens cap is from a Fujifilm canister. It's the same as this one:

I too have used the DA hood on an Adaptall 28mm lens with great results. So last evening I was browing eBay for some step down rings but the best combination I could come up with was 49 to 46 then 46 to 37 and 37 to 30.5. I did not see a 49 to 37 as you are showing on the above picture. Could you please tell me where you found a 49 to 37? Thanks.

For whatever reason, 49-37 ring is kind of hard to find. And if you find it, it's costlier than others. I bought item # 380148678587.

Item # 200358237174 is still available.

Cool, and you can use the film carnister cap for WB measurement.
