Macro lenses..

Hi everybody,

The best macro lens for K20...K7..??
I'm looking for one comparable to the Oly 50mm macro...(my old system)
I have the 77m and 43mm... just need a close focus sharp lens...
Thanks for any help...

Noah

So if the Oly 50mm has a quivalent FOV of 100mm then I think the Sigma 70mm will be about right (105mm eqivalent). This lens gets great reviews and is a very useful focal length.

I have the Sigma 180mm and I think it is amazing.

The Pentax FA/DFA 50, and FA/DFA 100 are very well regarded. So are the Sigma 70 and Tamron 90. The DA 35 macro is also great but you need to get closer.

I have the FA 50 and it is an amazing lens, to be sure.

I have the Sigma 70 and it is nothing short of amazing. Given the focal length you are wanting (100mm) it's probably your best fit.

That being noted, I have the FA77 also and the two focal lengths are pretty similar. They are totally different lenses though and both deserve to be in your kit, but you may want to consider DA35 or DFA100 for some more variance in your focal lengths.

I don't think there is a macro lens for Pentax that is less than stellar.

If paired to a K-7...

True Macro> DFA 100/2.8

Close Focus Crop> DA 70/2.4 Limited, or FA 77 Limited

Post Processing> PS Lightroom 2.5

Cheers...

There's no single *best* macro. They're all very sharp and capable macros.
Just get the FL that suits you best, and decide on whether you want the more modern AF options, or an older MF lens that will be considerably cheaper.

I'd opt for an AF one myself - any of the already mentioned options will serve you well.

There are several votes for the Sigma 70. If the price seems a little steep, you might want to consider the Sigma 50/2.8 EX DG Macro. It has the same build and similar optical quality at a much lower price point. I have been very pleased with the performance of my copy. The only drawback is the working distance at 1:1, though that would not be any worse than what you are used to with your Oly.

Steve

P.S. I think I paid less than $250 USD for mine...

purple fringing

DFA macros are better in controlling purple fringing, which is a useful feather for product shots. I like my DFA 50mm. They are light and easy to use on a digital camera. But it is not as well built as some older K and M lenses.

I have the Tamron 90mm Macro myself .... but I have seen excellent results from the Sigma 70mm Macro ... and a work colleague has one on his Canon system and he LOVES it.

from what I have seen the 70 is an excellent lens.

If this best suits your FL ... it'd be the best choice.

But as mentioned .. for image quality ... there really is no one winner ... are all very close in quality.

I've found the FA*200/4 to be very good and with ample working distance.
