Urgent: sigma 18-50 2,8 ex dc (not macro) vs 17-70 dc macro 2,8-4,5

About these two sigma which is better? I have readden various opinion and very different.

They are both reasonably good lenses.
One has a wider range, but the max. aperture is variable - some people don't like that.
Otherwise, they both should produce sharp images throughout their range.

I just bought the 17-70 and after a few test shots, I'm extremely pleased with the lens. Performance at even 2.8 gives a nice shallow DOF, and 4.5 at 70mm still gives a decent DOF for portraits. I can't wait to get it into the field to really test it. I chose this lens because 50mm is a little short for me.

I had the 18-50/2.8, it's good. I would also consider the Tamron 17-50/2.8 if you're buying new.

Versus the 17-70? Well, they're two different lenses for different applications. Pick the one that works best for you.
