Hin's 600mm 1st shot

I tried my virtual 600mm from a tele len plus a TC yesterday. Hand Held. Straight from camera at 600mm with no editing. Guess what combination that I used in Hin's LBA/CBA camera gear set

Thanks,
Hin

Nice shot especially hand held. I have difficulty with my 200mm Tak and converter. I'll guess you used the Tair and the 2x Kenko.

Good guess, it is neither of the two are involved.

That is correct and the 2x TC is the one that I plan to sell Tokina 2x Teleplus MC7 AF TC. Now that I see its help with the Pelican picture, it darn on me that I have a 600mm in my bag and not knowing it. My Pentax-F 1.7x AF TC will do better in terms of IQ and others. The Tokina AF is so reliable and a bit slow on the 300mm that I shot all test shots in MF. The above picture is unedited straight from Jpg. I am sure I will get better with more practice. The whole gig is very much hand-holdable and cost NOT too much

My used Pentax F* 300mm f/4.5, bought from Kerrick James, one of the Pentaxian well known for active shooting in traveling, landscape and active sports as in canoe and mountain climbing
$700.00

Tokina 2x Teleplus MC7 AF TC: $90

For better IQ and AF: Pentax F-1.7x AF TC, the well know AFA
$350

So my 600mm or 510mm gig ran from $790 to $1050. Not bad if you ask me. Of course, there are other options with cheaper price such as my Photosniper PhS Tair-3 300mm f/4.5 with Kiron 2x doubler. But the thing will kill me in walking with the Pelican.

Surprising that I like my out of focus shot
and decide to keep it for preserving memory
My 1st shot when I spotted the White Pelican
was off focus as I scrambled to pan his movement as
he is closing in

I missed my 2nd shot due to clipping the wing in framing and the best shot
happened in the 3rd shot

Bad framing, a 400mm will have both in the frame

candid in close distance
but wrongly set in TAv with high shutter speed,
hence unnecessary high ISO but I like the film grain noise in the mistake

Try focal b&w to isolate the small flower

Please don't sit there, fly babies fly

Only the black neck fly all in a sudden after my request

Thanks,
Hin

Great IQ. There are a couple of spots on the blue sky that I would have edited out.

I did not pay attention. Is that in the #1 photo? I changed lens on a constant basis and I won't be surprised.

[update] I do see the obvious one on the last picture. I will need to clean asap, thx.

Thanks,
Hin

I sum up my impressions with my 600mm rig from Pentax F* 300mm f/4.5 and Kenko/Tokina Pz-AF 2x Teleplus MC7

Thanks,

Great!

You have taken some great pictures. I found my K10d has problem focusing objects far away. I tried different lenses, the problem persists. Fortunately, I use my manual lenses often.

Thanks for the comments. Your noted problems with AF in your K10D can be due to low contrast in your distant objects that the AF can't pick up the focal point in a distance. For instance, if I point the lens towards a white and cloudy sky with low contrast, that always give me problem in AF. And MF is my friend in those situations. A quick shift in focusing as in DA* 300mm or the like will also help in avoiding the tele-lens to travel round-trip and still fail to lock on focus. That fine tuning that is allowed in MF give the system some ample of time to pick out the focal point.

I can honestly say that I am NOT a fan of the AF system in Pentax K20D. It is my #1 whining that I hope K-7 addresses its pitfalls and opens up to areas of wildlife photography with fast faction.

Thanks,
Hin
