Vivitar Series One 70-210 2.8-4 (version 3)

I have this lens for KA and love it! It is very sharp, albeit sort of heavy to handhold (it doesn't have a tripod mount). Any other comments on it?

I have this lens too and love it as well. Yes, its heavy and I findthat my hand gets sore after shooting for while. But the sharpness makes it worth the effort.

i just got mine today, but it is the 4th version, which they say is not as good as the older 3 versions most especially the 3rd version. i did some quick tests a while ago and i must say that it is rather sharp. the only downside is the weight and the push-pull zoom, which makes focusing a daunting task. another thing, i worry the camera's mount while having the lens on. will weight damage the mount on the camera?

anyways, here's a photo i took a while ago. one of the quick tests i did. this one's at 210mm f/5.6

what i loved about mine was it's color. it had great color retention. a little better than the smc A70-210 but the smc was a bit sharper. both are tanks. use either for clubbing off muggers.

I respectfully disagree with anyone that claims that the 4th version isn't as good. A lot of people who quote Vivitar 70-210 Series 1 Macro Zooms - Mark Roberts Photography don't realize that the author didn't actually owned the Cosina version (ver. 4) but merely made an unsubstantiated claim that it wasn't as good as the earlier versions.

Even if the 4th one really isn't as good as the 3rd one, it should tell you just how good the third one really is. I have had some minor issues with vignetting, but that's it. Also, to be honest, I find that I really like the push-pull zoom. However, since modern push-pulls work in the opposite direction of the V3, I don't think I'd get another one.

I know version three is an excellent lens, haven't had the experience with any other version. I sold it, after reading reviews, to buy the DA 50-200, and regret it. Optically I think the Vivitar is superior, and it's faster. Its only downside it the weight, I can live with either the two touch or the push pull zooms.....
