Sigma 600mm/8 for istDs?

Would this lens fit and be usable on my *istDs?

The seller states that it is a bayonet mount for Pentax so it will fit. Unless it interferes with the protruding flash housing on the camera...

It will be difficult to focus since the viewfinder will be very dark with an f/8 lens.

I have a 1100mm f10.5 mirror lens. It is hard to focus but mostly due to unstable tripod I use. When focusing the view shakes quite a bit. With 600mm and f8 this shouldn't be much of a trouble. (I too have DS)

Thanks guys, think I'll give this one a miss. It would be fun to have a really long lens though.

Your safest bet would probably be to use a 300 or 400mm with a 2x teleconverter

Yes I'd been thinking about a teleconverter but know absolutely nothing about them. I presume as far as controls etc. go it's exactly the same as not having one on? That is to say exposure and autofocus etc. all behave the same? How much do they slow the lens down by?

Let's say you put a 2x teleconverter on a 300mm F4.5 lens- the result would be 600mm F9. I've tried using up to 3 teleconverters: 400x2x2x1.5, and the combo was usable

For everyday tele shots, though, don't use more than one, since they may impact the overall quality.

Thanks for the lesson! I didn't realise they'd have such an impact on the speed. Something to ponder on.

With my *istD, I needed to use a decent solid tripod, and ball head, to efectively use a 1000mm f/11 reflex lens, otherwise there was too much vibration to focus. Here's a panorama taken with such a lens. (Apologies for the heat haze.) Tripod used was from Feisol, the 3371, with cb70 ball head. A setup with which I'm very pleased.

I had the Sigma 600 f8 for my Olympus OM system years ago. It was a decent lens. Wish I had one for the Pentax. It would pack lots of punch.
thanks
