For the same $$ about $1,000 to $1,200, does it make sense to wait for the new DA* 300m F4? Or forego prime lens for zoom to 500mm?
Thanks
No expert here but mutedphotos offered some reasonable alternatives. If you don't need the quiet, low aperture (=<f4) , and fast AF what has been offered here for suggestions would suit your needs I think.
However if you are filming a day in the life of a Cheetah at night in Africa - speed , low light performance and noise become serious attributes for consideration
As for primes vs zooms that is a personal preference - fans on both sides - truly your preference (my opinion for wildlife Zoom would be more convienient if nothing else)
I think the biggest issues with any of the DA* is
1) Unproven performance (although some have seen test shots) Beta and initial production release can be completely different – That said I think most are convinced it will be a star set of lenses (pun intended) and a winner
2) No firm release dates (Summer, Fall , Winter 07, Q1 '08, etc). If you are in no rush might very well be worth the wait. Depending on what type of wildlife you are shooting 300mm might be a tad short.
Easy as pie to make a decision eh ? hahah good luck
