I am planning to sell my DA21mm and FA 50 1.4 to collect money for a DA 70mm or DA 40mm.

Which one better 40 or 70 ?

Thanks

Whatever you do, don't sell your FA 50 f/1.4. Don't do it. Just don't do it. I know you are thinking that by having 17-70, you can substitute for 21 and 50. But a zoom cannot possibly substitute for 2 primes, no matter how good it is. Besides, that FA 50 f/1.4 is a gem like no other, a terrific value, a hell of a lens, even with its trivial short-comings. Of course, this is just my personal opinion. But as Ned said in his interview with photo.net, primes make you see things a bit differently, and I wholeheartedly agree with that. I think one exception is DA*50-135. I cannot believe how prime-like that lens is at different focal lengths. I have never seen anything like it. For whatever reasons DA*16-50 doesn't do that for me, and I just don't know why.

I think it depends on what you shoot.

For me(again, this is just for me), I would go with DA 21, FA 50, DA* 50-135, and in the future I would consider DA 15 limited, maybe sneak in DA 40 ltd, or something like that. I see nothing wrong with DA 21. I think it's a fun lens if you used it right. I just like primes. That's all.

Hope this helps!

I second to that.

IMHO, wide primes and tele zooms are a good combination. On the wide angle side, your legs can help to cover some focal range, while they wouldn't help much on the tele side.

I used to own the FA50/1.4 and enjoyed it very much. But I also noticed that I'd rarely shoot below f2 with the lens, as contrast and sharpness suffered quite a bite wider than f2. I also noticed that 50mm in my K200D seemed too short for portraiture, but too long for street shots.

My solution? I got a DA40 and a K55/1.8 The DA40 I use for street (incredibly fast focusing) and candids, while the K55/1.8 is great for lowlight, bokeh, portraiture and any other thing the FA50/1.4 can do except focus fast

Nowadays my main body cap is my DA40. And one more thing, I think the DA40 is much more durable than the FA50/1.4. My experience is that if I'd keep my FA50/1.4 out of use for quite some time, then use it, the AF takes some time (meaning several shots) before precise focusing returns. I was beginning to worry that the plastic body and parts may not be durable enough, especially when I normally leave and lug it around in my backpack without it being used. Didn't notice this with the DA40, which has a sturdier build. I prefer to have long lasting lenses as changing them frequently is becoming quite expensive.
