LBA 12-24 vs DA*16-50

Hi All,

I just got a DA12-24 and have had a DA*16-50 for a while now (2years).

I have to say that the DA12-24 is an impressive beast, well build and solid, weighty, though i am a little disappointed they dont include a bag for that price.

Image quality is superb and while there is PF it is about the same as the DA*16-50.

Big surprise though was the complete lack visible barrel distortion and infact it is less than the DA*16-50 at the wide end which for a 12mm is extremely good.

I will say that overall it is close to (in quality) as the DA* but not quite as nice. Thinner hood plastic, less dampning on the focus ring and smoother and slightly cheaper feel plastics.

But too be honest that is the real difference. Image quality is about par (excellent)and worth every cent. So glad to have it now and a great compliment to the DA* !

Cheers Neil

I also like the wider focusing rings on the DA* over the DA lenses. Pentax DA* 11-16mm f/2.8 SDM... Still waiting...

I also have both , would not give up either both have their uses. In the recent workshop I was at in Uath those two lenses accounted for over 80% of the shots taken.

Is that on a roadmap? because that is exactly what I would want to compliment my 31 and 77. I had considered the 14mm as well.

I have the 12-24 and everything you say is correct. IQ is good although I've had my battles with CA with this lens, mostly with Photoshop ACR and Lightroom (Pentax supplied raw convertor is much better in this regard...must have built-in knowledge of the Pentax lenses).

Biggest issue is it just doesn't have the quality "feel" to go along with the IQ.

I was hoping you'd say that the DA* 16-50 was going to be head-and-shoulders above the 12-24 but it sounds like that's NOT what your saying
I'm desparately looking for something to fill in the gap between the 12-24 and the DA* 50-135.....guess I'll keep looking.

.

Tamron 17-50 f/2.8 - a wonderful lens, about $380 USD from prodigital2000.

Cons: no SDM
Pros: no SDM

Kidding... But if you want a good-but-cheaper alternative to the 16-50, the Tammy
fits the bill. Only real con is no weather sealing.

17mm f/8

Jay, it's clear you like Tamron glass - I'm with you having some myself and vouch for their amazing results. That shot is just brilliantly sharp, bright and colourful.

Tamron have got good forumlae for their glassware...
