Looking for a good cheap wide angle

The problem with a 1.5x crop factor is that cheap wide angle lenses are REALLY hard to find on the used market...but I'm trying anyway. I currently use the kit lens in lieu of a wide angle prime, but I much prefer the ergonomics, mechanics, and compactness of an old manual prime lens.

Any suggestions for a cheap wide angle? The cheapest options seem to be in the 24mm range, but that's still a little long (36mm equivalent). I've also seen a Tamron 17/3.5 on KEH for $170 or so, but that seems a little steep. Is there a cheap amazing lens out there that I don't know about?

As a cheaper alternative, you might consider a wide-angle lens converter. These attach using the filter threads to the front of a lens. Made for many upper-end point & shoot cameras and/or video cameras, these can often be purchased for comparatively low prices, with more than a few delivering very acceptable image results. They can be found in sizes all the way up to 67mm, with obviously fewer larger ones available than smaller ones.

When purchasing a converter, pay attention to how much weight a lens might comfortably support. A plastic lens, for example, might bend slightly under the weight of a heavy metal converter, causing potential problems with the internal focus or zooming mechanisms. Therefore, a heavy converter should only be attached to a stronger metal lens, while a less rigid lens would gain from a lightweight converter made with a plastic housing.

Everyone with a Zenitar fisheye lens seems to love it, although I understand that you might get your feet in the picture.

They are around $160.00 new.

I'm using a Pentax 10-17, and it's a nice lens as well, but a lot more expensive.

I'm quite interested in that Zenitar. Salty in particular seems to like it very much, and I've seen him take great pictures with it. Where can I get one? I haven't seen it in B&H thus far.

I think it still is Victor (selling at eBay) that is the No 1 source.

The current Pentax 16-45 f4 offers great value and great images compared to an old extra wideangle. (hard to find, so-so distortion correction for old lenses, good ones aren't cheap).

Another vote for the Zenitar 16mm FE, although I've replaced it w/ the DA10-17. The Zenitar is probably the best deal for a super wide ...

Cast another vote for the Zenitar - I used it quite a bit in Yosemite, gives quite an interesting perspective... makes good Panos too

Hi!

I have bought on eBay Tokina 193 (19-35mm/3.5-4.5), for Pentax AF, have paid about 70 GBP, used, near mint. I am very glad, IQ is satisfying.
Cheers

Is it the RMC one?

Ive got one and i love it to bits, its just perfect on the film slr and still pretty decent on the k100d. Although it will become redundant for digital duties when i buy the 16-45

The review of the 17mm can be found here,

Let's make it a landslide vote for the Zenitar. The nice thing about the Zenitar (besides it's amazingly inexpensive price) is that the fisheye distortion is not terribly severe. With careful framing and cropping you hardly know it's a fisheye at all. On the other hand the distortion is there when wanted, again with careful framing.

I'd like to know, if it's possible to make those funny fisheye portraits with zenitar (16mm on dslr is not ultra, ultra wide). You know, those with big nose in front and small ears

My understanding is that the fisheye effect is pretty mild on the APS-C digital body--for the more extreme effect, you'd probably want the DA10-17 instead. Of course, you could mount the Zenitar on a film body and go to town. Focal length for fisheyes doesn't translate directly to corrected lenses--16mm fisheye still has a considerably wider field of view than a 16mm rectillinear lens.
