I agree with Marc here. He is using primes and if you know that you shoot you can have just two or three of them. And you can have very-very good lenses for cheap.
My set of 28mm F2.8 + 50mm F1.7 + 135mm F2.8 cost me less then $200. And 50mm here is AF model :-)
But I much more prefer 28-200mm Vivitar or 24-200mm Tokina zooms on my camera. Or sometimes old good Focal 80-200mm F3.5 if I do not carry it in hands.
For indoor shots fixed lenses have very high value.
I also use reversed 28mm for extreme macro shots, like photos of LCD pixel structure :-).

Just turn off SR and increase the shutter speed...and that's it..This happens to me as well and since than i just use the tripod and 2s delay /self shooter/.
