I compared my 35 to my 50 1.7's sharpness and it seems they are evenly match when it comes to sharpness at f/2. and you know how sharp the 50 is at 1.7. so there's no way the 35 is soft-ish at f/2.

To get better low light performance at ~30mm, you have to buy the Pentax 31mm f/1.8 Limited or the Sigma 30mm f/1.4...
