Usually more like $800. Which is just a bit rich for me, alas.

All the more reason why Pentax needs to produce an affordable fast normal lens for DSLRs. 50mm F1.4, F1.7 and F2 lenses were all available for reasonable prices in the past (often as 'kit' lenses) - why not a similar lens somewhere around the 30mm range now?

Sigma already makes a very decent 31mm f/1.4.

why?

no one shoots that wide open anyway

the DA40 F2.8 is a fantastic lens.

the FA31 is for niche photography.

I also shoot wide open at times, especially in low light situations.

F1.8??

go do an analysis of your photo library of F1.8 keepers.

now keep in mind i have an F1.2 lens myself...

but its very rare that i go down that low, F2.8 is usually the bottom, anything less is for very specialty shots

You have a point there.
I do believe that for normal photography one rarely needs annything faster than 2.8.
But on the other side, there is a lot of people who enjoy shallow dof of fast lenses.
But I do't think fast cheap normal lens is what Pentax should be concentrating on. I think they have bigger gaps to fill.

Nonsense. Your definition of "normal" is a bit biased. Just a couple weeks ago I shot a family dinner with the FA31. No flash. Stuck at f/1.8 the whole time, 1/30s, ISO1600. Many GREAT shots. F/2.8 would mean either ISO3200 (noise becomes a problem, colors noticeably washed) or 1/15s (movement becomes a problem).

Not online, sorry. But there's a bunch of others in my flickr set for the FA31, most wide open, high res, if you want to take a peek.
