Vivitar lens...any good?

I've seen a Vivitar Pentax K-mount 17mm - 28mm f4-4.5 lens at an auction, but can't really find any reviews for it.

Has anyone had any experience of this lens? If so, what are your thoughts? It's currently going for a shade over $100.... What's a top price you would pay for one in mint condition?

Hmmm....no reply in 6 hours, yet more than 60 views....this suggests few ppl know about this lens...which is now up to almost $130.

Did you try to search here and see if anyone else has used this lens?

Here's a thread where someone posted some photos taken with that lens:

It looks like a very, very rectilinear lens, which means it's interesting, wider lenses usually have more distorsion.

I think I saw that same auction but I'm letting you have it :P

There is a guy over at Steve's Digicam Pentax Lens Forum who collects Vivitar lenses. Try posting there Pentax Lenses - Steve's Digicams Forums.

I don't know that particular lens, but would guess that it is probably one of a number of similar lenses produced in Korea and widely rebranded, particularly during the 1990s when companies like Samyang were breaking in to the market.

These lenses tended to be quite decent for the money- capable of good sharpness when closed down a couple of stops, not bad flare control, and OK build quality provided the screws were properly tightened.

However, at $130 the auction price is probably higher than the new price for the lens. I wouldn't pay more than $70 for a lens in that class.

If you're only shooting digital, a used Pentax 18-55 kit lens, which probably could be found for under $100, is a much better bet.

My opinion is based on what I remember of reviews from that period, as well as ownership of a Samyang lens (I think an 18-28) for a while.
