If it is from an outfit like B&H or Adorama, I'd say go for it.
If it's something like Broadway Photo, I'd be very careful.

I got my 20-35 from Adorama as a 'Demo' lens, and have not had a single problem with it. Aside from the possibility of getting one of the "bad" 16-50's, you're totally safe.

I just bought a demo 55-300 from Ritz/Wolf's ebay store. I could not tell it from a new lens. Make sure to check out the Ritz website clearance area. It is all Pentax and has some decent deals on lenses and some accessories.

There's lots of discussion already on the choice between Tamron 17-50, Sigma 18-50 and DA* 16-50. If you're not sure which one to get I'd suggest reading about them here (as well as on the lens review database) before making the decision.

Do you get full waranty? In that case it is OK.

You can find agitated posts here and elsewhere from people that got bad (early?) copies of the DA*16-50. The silent majority, like me, who got good copies usually write about something else. I've been using it more than I thought and doesn't regret buying it. It's not the fastest AF (thought faster on the K-7) I think largely due to loads of heavy lins elements. Takes momentum to accelerate the engines. Probably Pentax need another sort of (stronger) built in lens AF motors in the future. But in the wider end of the focal range it doesn't really matter since the DOF is deep.
