Tokina for pentax

Hello!
I have a Pentax K110-D and I saw in more than one web of internet like ebay, fotoboom... that tokina lenses are compatible with the pentax mount. But then I phoned to one photo accesories shop and they say me that Tokina dosn´t fabricate lenses with pentax mount.
Are, or not compatible the Tokina lenses with pentax? (for example the tokina 80-400mm)

Well, if you buy one with a Pentax mount, then it's compatible. If you don't, or can't, then it isn't.

Shop was wrong.

Tokina makes Pentax K-Mount lenses.

What they really meant was that they didn't carry Tokina lenses in Pentax mount.

If I don't have it, it doesn't exist....

Tokina used to make K-Mount lenses, so you can still find them in places like ebay, but the last Tokina K-Mount lens was produced in 2002 - Tokina now co-develops some lenses with Pentax, so there are 'cousin' lenses available from Pentax that are very similar to some Tokina lenses, specifically:

Well, yes and no.

Tokina currently has a joint development/marketing agreement with Pentax, which means that many of Tokina's high-end lenses DO NOT come in Pentax mount -- but there's a Pentax-branded twin.

For example, there's a Tokina 50-135mm f/2.8 for Nikon and Canon, and there's a Pentax 50-135mm f/2.8 that's basically the same lens. There is no Tokina 50-135mm for Pentax -- you're supposed to buy the Pentax version. Same is true for 16-50mm, 12-24mm, 10-17mm fisheye, and so on.

But there are other Tokina lenses available for Pentax mount. The 80-400mm is one example, and it may be the only one in current production (is it?). There are older ones too, from before the agreement with Pentax.

I was thinking to buy one tele zoom lens, and I see the tokina 80-400mm, that isn´t bad nad it have good price.
Do you know any other tele not so expenssive?

To be more specific, Pentax developed the
DA10-17 fisheye
DA*16-50
DA*50-135
DA35ltd macro
DFA100 macro (slightly changed optical formula based on F/FA100 macro, see Pentax Short Telephoto Prime Lenses)
Perhaps Tokina contributed somehow, but Pentax is the only company name on the patents, so I doubt that. It is more likely that Pentax has licensed the optical designs to Tokina. A quite common sort of deal historically between different lens makers. Tokina manufacturers their own versions, apply their own coating, and you don't get SDM and weather resistance on the DA* lenses. Also, at least the Tokina version of the 35ltd is very plastic and far from limited build quality. Obviously in this deal Pentax must be making money on Tokinas sales to Canikon users who buy these lenses and Tokina are forbidden to sell them with K mounts. Pentax would be a fool to let someone compete with low budget versions of their own designs.

In the same way, but vice verse, the DA12-24 is a Pentax build of a licensed Tokina design. Probably Tokina get their share of Pentax profit on that lens.

Simple as that. Lens history is full of this. But they would never talk openly about the details of the economical agreements.

Thanks for the info, I didn't know that. Sounds like someone should update that wikipedia page.

Someone on DP Review Forum contacted Tokina and were informed that Tokina only produces lenses in mounts that have at least 5 percent of the market. Pretty reasonable considering their small size as a company. Anyway, Pentax has been way below that since I can remember.

Also, as mentioned above, if they have licensed Pentax's designs, they certainly couldn't compete with them with those particular designs.

The 80-400 AT-X comes in three versions - the original and the second were made in pentax mount but the most recent which is optimized for digital is only in Canon and Nikon mounts.

The first two are still good lenses second hand if they can be found.

Well, last thing I read about it (after much gossip without evidence) appears to support some sort of informal economical relationship that is not eassy to understand if you are not into Japanses business culture. But even so, I'm sure each board and director wants to report the best economical numbers, so Pentax could not allow someone to aim their own sword at themself. If they also belong to the same informal Japanese economical structure, all partners are probably even more interrested in avoiding internal competition.

I thought about doing it, but I would need the time to dig up (again) the patens and other references, since I think it is useless to change anything in wiki without adding real references.

Has anybody here any experience with Tokina ATX PRO 80-200/2.8?
I have read couple of reviews on it on the net, mostly good. Everybody seems to like the build of the lens. I just wonder how does it compare to Sigma 70-200/2.8, Tamron 70-200/2.8 and DA*50-135/2.8???
any info will be usefull,
