Does anyone have the Sigma 28-300?

I'm in the market for something in the range of 28-300 for some upcoming motorsports events and was looking into the Sigma 28-300 f/3.5-6.3 DG Macro AF. I'll be trackside, standing on the inside of a turn and would like to be able to shoot the cars/bikes as they are approaching from a distance, up close, and as they are exiting the corner. Something in this range seems perfect. There's no way im pulling it off with the kit lens, lol.

There's no reviews over the lens, and was just curious if anyone does actually have the lens? If so, what are your opinions on it? Image quality?

I've read the mixed reviews on bhphoto, but am still unsure which way to go with them. Some praise it like it's the best, while some say it's the worst.

Any feedback, personal reviews, or suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks.

I don't have the lens, but all reports I've heard are that it is extremely mediocre atbest - certainly worse than the kit lens in all respects.

You might want to reconsider whether you really need as much zoom range as that. When you say the kit lens doens't work for you, I assume that's because 55mm isn't a long enough focal lengh for the distant shots. How wide do you think you'd need for the close ups? I'm wondering if you could get by with the 55-300 or 50-200. Also wondering if something like the Tamron 28-75/2.8 might perhaps actually be enough at the long end. Or the old Pentax 28-105/3.2-4.5 - actually, that right there could perhaps be your best choice.

Thanks!

My previous camera (Samsung Pro-815) had a 28-420 f/2.2 - F4.6 lens on it. I rarely went to 420, but have spent some time in the range of 150-300. With the kit lens, I just feel so restricted compared to my previous camera.

As an update, I do have an 18-250 Pentax lens on the way, so I will see how this does. Thank you for the tips.

That will probably work well for you. The focal length numbers you mentioned for your Samsung are in 35mm equivalent FOV terms, so looked at in that way, your 18-250 will be like a 28-375. Meaning it will feel very much like what you are used to. It is a stop slower (maximum aperture) all around, but you can always push your ISO higher on your DSLR to compensate. You could probably shoot at ISO 800 with better results than the Samsung would have given you at 400, for instance, if you need to go there to get fast enough shutter speeds. And don't be at all surprised if that turns out to be necessary.

Ha, you should see the Samsung at anything above ISO-50. It is horrid due to the small sensor.

Is there a conversion chart or math for 35mm focal length to digital?
