How much to pay for a 50/1.2

I'm looking at an auction for a "k series 50mm f1.2". At this stage there is no more info, but I'll be asking questions. So what questions should I ask, and how much is average price for this or any variations?

It really all depends on the condition of the lens but on average (assuming that the lens is in good condition and functioning normally) I would expect to pay between $200-$350 US for the "K" version and $300-$450 US for the "A" version. Keep in mind I'm from the US and don't know what the lens market is like in New Zealand.

Arpe: IIRC I paid about $300 for my "K" version. I too, find it very sharp, I like the bokeh on the FA 1.4 a bit better, but still a great lens. Shots can be found here:

Some call this lens soft, but I've never found it so.

NaCl(highly recommended...and no (just) )H2O

James: Please note that the excellent lens you have there is an A50/1.2...

Arpe: The K50/1.2 and the A50/1.2 are not very rare lenses. They are sold from time to time, not that very often but I think you should wait for a reasonable price. The K version should sell for less than the A version. With the K10D it's of even bigger interest having an A version (which also has one more aperture blade for softer bokeh).

The price? It varies but the prices mentioned by DAP seems reasonable if the lens is in a very good condition.

Good luck,

I purchased one from KEH in September of last year. It was rated by them as being in "EX" condition. That is a stretch. All other lenses I've gotten from them that were rated as "EX" were in a lot better shape. This is the first time I feel that they miss-rated their product.

(But, on further reading of the descriptions for the different rating categories, it could be argued that it is an accurate rating - we are just used to them under-rating their lenses. It also depends on who does the rating. They put their name on the label, and this rater was a new name to me. I think for suspect lenses in the future, I'll call and ask who did the rating.)

Optically, it is fine. Just looks like a well used lens. All of the lettering is no longer white but has a yellowish cast to it. Lots of brassing too. I might be able to clean it up, or send it to a lens repair person to restore. Haven't decided yet.

Price I paid was $465 (without a front cap, which cost me an extra $8.00). This is for an A version.

Okay I got one (an A 50/1.2) for $481 (US$350) with both caps. It looks in good condition on the photos. Manual focus may re-awaken some of the ol' grey matter that hasn't been used for a while!

Thanks for your help.

For general, i'd suggest you to get the FA 50/1.4 version.
I bought K 50/1.2 for $260 in EX+ condition. It's not ideal for moving object. With moving object, it's obviously hard to MF with high aperture.
In my experiences, in 10 (kid portraite) shoots, only 2 would be considered in focus. The other 8 shoots are have BF or FF issue.

K100D + K 50/1.2 @f2.4

kyrios

Thanks Kyrios, but I'd have to get a FA50 from overseas, no-one seems to have them here. Too late now anyway. Maybe in the future if I don't like the manual focus I'll get one.

I absolutely love my A50/1.2 - it is among the 4 or 5 that are always in consideration when I head out.

As for the focus issues, you'll have to keep in mind (thanks to an article posted by RiceHigh and jeffkrol) that the focus screen has an inherent aperture value - which is smaller than both f/1.2 and f/1.4 with a 50mm lens. So the problems in manual focusing are from the focus screen not reporting the exact focal point because its aperture value is smaller than the lens' value.

Sometimes it takes a back-and-forth focus to get it right, but when you do you'll be amazingly happy.

Just an update. My A50/1.2 has arrived. Looks in mint condition to me, not a single scratch or any sign of wear, which is great, but a worry for me, I don't want to mark it either! Long weekend this weekend, but bad weather forecast may have to try to be imaginative inside. (hah!)

That's certainly the right lens for it!

Enjoy.

Yeah, but "imaginative" and "me" are rarely used in the same sentence!

This lens is fantastic for abstract work.

When you go for the same casual walk every weekend, this lens gives a lot of possibilities for photography. It definitely gives a new scope for experimental shots
