Pentax extreme wide angle lenses-where are they?

Pentax needs an extreme wide angle zoom, from about 10 to 20 mm, like the Sigma. I know Pentax has a 12-24 but for $ 1299 Cdn...forgetaboutit !! Unbelievable price..I understand this year there was a significant price increase. Is this true ?

The Tokina 12-24 is around $ 899 Cdn....but not available in Pentax mount, just Canon and Nikon. I also hear that they are the same lens as the Tokina 12-24...true ??

I have also heard and maybe someone can confirm that Hoya owns Tokina?

I'm trying hard to continue being a Pentaxian (40 + years) but Pentax needs to get some reasonable prices out there and more lens variety.

BTW I've bought since 2007...a K10D, KM, 16-45, 55-300, 50 f1.4 , 360 flash, battery grip, remote control, etc...

I do like my Pentax 16-45, but I want an extreme wide angle, preferably at a reasonable price with the Pentax brand on it.

You could get the DA 10-17mm Fisheye, it doesn't get more extreme than that! I really like that lens, it is fun to use!

The 12-24mm BTW produces images of a very high quality, it is worth whatever it costs. The "street" price should be much less than what you quote, though. The 12-24 was co-developed with Tokina which explains why it isn't available from Tokina in Pentax mount.

The DA 14, DA 15 ltd, 12-24 and 10-17 (fish eye) are the only extreme wides available with the Pentax label, but Sigma also makes a 10-20 (rectilinear) and an 8mm fish eye for the Pentax mount.

Not Pentax branded, but it doesn't get much more extreme than this.

Sigma | 4.5mm f/2.8 EX DC HSM Lens for Pentax Digital | 486-109

QuoteQuote:
The Sigma 4.5mm f/2.8 EX DC HSM Lens is a spherical fisheye lens that easily captures a full 180 view in all directions, in a circular image.

Perhaps your title should read "Cheap Pentax wide angle lenses-where are they?"

Not cheap, but reasonable. I'm willing to pay in the 800 dollar Cdn. area, but it's hard to pony up the 1299 for the 12-24 when the Tokina 12-24 (same lens ?) goes for more than a few hundred less. Also hard since the Pentax 12-24 just had a significant price raise a few months ago.

I have been looking at both the Sigma 10-20 and the Pentax 10-17 fisheye.

Concerns re; the Sigma...is it really good, or soft at the edges and sometimes the center ?

The Pentax 10-17 Fisheye...can I use it as an extreme wideangle by varying the angle...or is it all....as the name implies....all fisheye at every setting and at every angle ?

There's also the Tamron 10-24mm for ~$500.

It would be a great option if available in Canada.
Doesn't seem to be available in Canada with the Pentax mount. I checked two of the biggest camera store chains in Canada, that I deal with and they don't list it.With the Nikon and Canon mount only it goes for $ 739 Cdn.

I don't buy from the States or other countries because of warranty concerns.

Amazon.com: $730 new for DA 12-24.

Warranty concerns? With a Pentax product? That is guaranteed a 1yr warranty wherever you are??

The DA10-17 works as a fish eye at 10mm and a extreme wide angle at 17mm. You can see some examples in my flickr (each lens has its own set so it is easy to find). It is a really fun lens, two lenses in one.

DA15ltd is a really good lens. My favorite right now.

I don't know about the 12-24 (Tokina design, licensed to Pentax), but the DA10-17 (Pentax design, licensed to Tokina) is much better built in the Pentax version than in its Tokina version. Coating is also different. Same with the DA35ltd (Pentax design, licensed to Tokina), an all metal limited in Pentax version and very plastic in Tokina version. This may explain the price difference.

If you can live with a lens that doesn't have a "Pentax" badge on it, the Sigma 10-20 is a fantastic lens. The results seem to always be very very sharp and the reviews are stellar. Ask around or use the search function on this forum to read up about actual owner experiences. I think you'll find this lens makes most very happy.

Pentax Canada puts a two year guarantee on lenses and camera gear that they sell.

Right and that's why I prefer to buy from a Canadian dealer...getting stock from Pentax Canada...extra year of warranty over the International warranty.
