What are you going to use it for?

What camera are you going to use it on?

What lenses do you already have?

The Helios 44-2 58mm f2 can be had from ebay $30 shipped. I just got one and it's sharp wide open- I'm happy! Some shots:

The Carl Zeiss Jena 35mm f/2.4 is a great M42 lens, and not just because I am selling one right now in the Marketplace. :-)

This is what the OP has according to the about me page :

Pentax Equipment
Pentax K10D
Pentax DA 12-24 f4
Pentax FA 28-70 f2.8 Star
Pentax FA 80-200 f2.8 Star
Pentax FA 20 f2.8
Pentax F 50 f1.7

the m42 to K mount is back in stock at pentax (ordered mine yesterday, shipped today).

the zeiss 35mm f2.4 looks nice but $200 is a bit much for me.

an 85mm super tak would go nicely with your kit, as well as something in the 35mm range.

I would go for a prime.....and I second the 85 (1.8 or 1.9). It really depends on the focal length you would like to use. I'd recommend (for Takumars);

- Tak 28/3.5 is a terrific lens that is cheap.
- I hear the 35/2 is a terrific (still searching for a mint one myself so I can't say from experience)
- I like the 55/1.8
- as mentioned the 85s are terrific
- 135/2.5

Also, don't discount the preset or autotaks...

Although the 35mm f2 is a great lens it's probably the most radioactive lens in my collection.
Be prepared to have yellow elements, if you find one.
However yellow elements can give you a very interesting looking photo. Mine left my photographs looking like they were very OLD.
I ended up doing the tinfoil wrapped around the lens, and leaving it in the window trick.... at times I wish I had left it alone

smc, I should probably know this, but you don't live around Kelowna do you?
If you do your more than welcome to borrow my 35mm f2, for a few days.

I also suggest to look at old 80-200 and 80-210 F3.5 zooms.
Look for good quality construction, they are available in Sears and Focal brands and also Soligor C/D. First two are usually very cheap. But my Focal lens is on par with 50mm F1.7 then stopped down a little. Pretty usable at F3.5 for whole range.

Hey little laker....I appreciate the offer but I'm down on the island and we only make it up your way every second summer or so to check out the wineries.

gemini....if you wanted to try something a little cheaper, there are some lesser known brands....something like a Yashinon DS ....

Helios and Jupiter are Soviet brands worth looking at, from Germany consider Meyer Optik, Carl Zeiss, Isco Gottingen, not sure if Voigtlander did M42 but if so worth an investigate.
A sample of the Meyer Optik Oerestor M42 f2.8 for you.

The SMC Takumar 55/1.8. Plentiful, affordable, and very capable.
