What lens has the largest filter diameter?

This isn't really important, I was just wondering. What lens for Pentax has the largest filter diameter?

It would be a 600/4 - IIRC, it's 150mm or so...

Yes, just checked: Filter 43 (150) mm

The 300/2.8 and the 250-600/5.6 both have 112mm front elements. The FA* 300/2.8 has a PF filter installed, and AFAIK the FA* 250-600/5.6 does not have one installed (the higher serial numbers anyway).

Regards,
Marc

hmm. that is very big. i think i need to revise my question. i guess what got me curious was the OEM pics i keep seeing of the new cannons, etc with extremely physically wide lenses on them. so i guess my real question what pentax compatible lens of normal size has the largest diameter? i know a huge telephoto lens is going to have a large diameter

I owned this filter for a brief time before selling it here with the lens.

The largest "normal" size lens would run 77mm in diameter - many lenses will have this: DA 12-24, DA* 16-50, etc.

Hope I understood it right this time - or are you refering to lenses with aspherical front elements (tilt/shift, Nikkor 14-24/2.8 UWA, a fisheye lens, etc.) that might not accept a front filter?

*still confused*

OEM pictures with wide diameter lenses? I've never seen one. Here are some shorter wide diameter lenses:

10-20mm

16-50mm

50mm 1.2

If my memory does not fail me, Nikon system's largest filter diameter is 82mm, Canon and Pentax's is 77mm. Long telephoto lenses with huge diameters are special lenses and they use drop-in filter system, there is a little drawer like gap behind the lens and you insert the special filter on his own brand to avoid huge filters. For instance:

1200/8 ED [IF] 150/49
300/2.8 ED [IF] 112/49
400/2.8 ED [IF] 145/49
600/5.6 ED [IF] 112/49

FA* 250-600/5.6 ED [IF] 112/43
FA* 300/2.8 ED [IF] 112/43
FA* 600/4 ED [IF] 150/43

43 and 49mm sizes are for drop in filters in Pentax system.

Nikon drop-in system drawer pictures are here:

there are 2 needs for large diameter filters, one being fast long telephotos.

a 600mm F4 by definition needs a 150mm Diameter lens (as a minimum) because F stop actually means the ratio of length to diameter. Many of these lenses don't actually use filters in front of the lens, but have drop in units that go near the rear element. For practical purposes the largest filter i KNow is on a 300mm F2.8 at 112 mm. Lots of telephotos have 77 mm filters

BUT

Wide angle lenses also need big filters because the field of view is so wide, the filter has to be kept out of the field of view to avoid vignetting

You can find 77mm filters on the sigma 10-20, and 82mm filters on the sigma 24-70 F2.8 for this purpose.

The 800mm F4 Pentax 6x7 lens is 236mm in diameter but uses 77mm rear filters.

Most of the 6x7 lenses used 67 or 77mm filters. The largest was the old 55/3.5 with a 100mm filter and the 55-100 zoom and 500/5.6 tele with 95mm filters. Annoyingly the 45/4 and 75/4.5 use 82mm filters which are a little uncommon, so making do with one size and stepping rings isn't as easy as it sounds.
