walkaround lens

Hi all

Can anyone recommend a good walkaround lens for my k200d? I don't mind the kit lens but am letting it go to a friend who is just getting into photography.

I want wide (at most 18mm at the wide end) because I love shooting landscapes. I'm aware of whats out there new but am happy to go second hand to save some cash.

My kit lens was the Sigma 18-50mm f3.5-5.6, which from my understanding was slightly inferior to the Pentax 18-55mm? Therefore I am considering:

Pentax 18-55mm
Pentax 16-45mm
Sigma 17-70mm

Any recommendations on good walkaround lenses (both current and non-current)?

Cheers!

I use a Sigma 18-125 as a travel lens - good range, fairly small and light and gives above average results on my K20D.
Sigma EX 28-70 f2.8 works well as an indoor, low light and evening lens but is quite large and heavy but has very good IQ. Full frame lens that uses the better part of the lens on APS-C camera.

I'm using the 17-70 sigma as my outdoor walk-around. It's sharper and with a bit more range than the 18-50mm f3.5-5.6.

I also use it for indoor, flash portraits.

For me it's the perfect balance between IQ and range.

I just love the range of the new Canon 15-85mm. Wish Pentax or a 3rd party manufacturer could come up with something similar. I don't love the price tag though

Any particular reason you don't mention the Pentax 17-70mm?

G'day mate and welcome.
Walkaround lenses could vary from the wide-normal zooms to the superzooms, depending on what you would like the lens to do.

You've given options of wide-normals, but perhaps you should consider a superzoom like the Pentax DA 18-250 - huge range, and versatile with decent quality images - perhaps not as good or 'fast' (aperture-wise) as any of your 3 considerations, but it may be more than you need - again, just depends.

I'd go for a 2-lens set up, like the DA 16-45 and DA 55-300 or DA 17-70 and DA 55-300, but I don't mind switching lenses...

Hope this helps.

I'll second tcdk in recommending the Sigma 17-70. It's been my main lens on my K10D since I got it (unless I'm in a 50-135 mood). The Pentax 17-70 should be at least as good and better if you consider the rubber O ring.
I'll also second Ash's recommendation for the 55-300 as a second lens. I bought one of these for my wife's K200D to go along with her kit lens. The pair gives great FL range and versatility. (the 17-70 is better than the kit).

The Sigma 17-70mm looks like a great lens for a reasonable price. I already have an old Tokina 70-210mm f3.5 on the way so i don't think i need anything with a bigger range.

Money is tight so the cheaper the better.

My next question: Besides the obvious (Ebay and PF Marketplace), where can I look for second hand lenses?

Adorama, B&H, KEH are sources that I check frequently

I have two walkaroud setups. When shooting primes (most of the time, as this is my preference), it's with a 24, a 50 or 55, & a 135. One or more of these lenses can change depending upon my mood or perceived needs at the time (the 24 might be replaced by a 20 or 28, the 135 might be replaced with a 100 or 200, the fast 50 might be replaced with a slower 50 macro) When using zooms, I use a two lens kit..... DA 16-45 & SMC F 70-210. I'd like to find a one lens high quality, reasonably sized zoom solution for a reasonable price, but there doesn't seem to be one to meet my qualifications.

IMO the best standard zoom if you favour shooting wide is the 16-45. Very sharp, great colours, significantly lower distortion at wide angle than any other 16 or 17mm option. The only downside is that it's a bit shorter than others. Still, it gets to short portrait length, and I have other lenses for long range.

If you are talking a one lens option ...and within the Pentax family, you may want to consider the DA 17-70 which has a very good reputation and is a very usefull focal range. For a prime, and if looking for something compact, the DA35 limited is excellent (my choice) and if you want something even more compact or wider, the DA21 limited is another good choice.

Cheers, Mike.
