According to my pre-purchase research, the 16-45 is definitely a candidate for most reliable Pentax zoom. In the chart focus tests I did, with a K100DS and K20D, under tungsten and natural light, my copy was bang on.

Great colour and contrast:

More sample here, including some architectural shots. The 16-45 has much lower distortion at 16mm and the 17-70 at 17mm.

The only time I have focus problems is in really low light, and not always. I was street shooting a couple weeks ago, and I had several shots that I got focus confirmation, but the subject was obviously out of focus. It wasn't all shots, so I think it was the lighting, not the lens.

Other than that, I've not had any focusing issues.

I second that. Except in low light and where you couldn't find much contrast, it does very well in AF, stands up quite well against its DA* cousin.

Outdoors and street photography, it is awesome except for its size but even with it, it is WAY better than the kit lens.

I would tend to blame the camera for focus problems in low light. I think the OP's concern was more about consistent BF/FF lens issues. I don't think BF/FF is a common problem for 16-45 owners.

Wanted to bump this thread, since there seems to be three well-priced 16-45's in the marketplace currently! (not mine )
