PENTAX-M 100mm f2.8 K

Hi everyone,

I am thinking about getting the 100mm 2.8k lens for some portrait work but the only one i have found seems to be quite expensive, around 150! Is this a reasonable price, and if not are there alternative lenses i can use? Any feedback will be greatly appreciated.

Joel

I think you can currently find one for a better price at KEH (keh.com).

BTW, terminology-wise, the "M" and "K" are different series of lenses. The "M" series says "SMC Pentax-M" on the lens. The "K" series (not its official name) simply says "SMC Pentax". There is no 100mm lens in the K series that I am aware of - just a 105. So you are presumably taling about the M. And KEH does have these typically for $100-something, depending on condition. I actually got mine on Ebay and paid arond $120 as I recall; I liked it so much I got one for my wife also - also on Ebay, and managed to get for under $100.

It's definitely on teh long side for portrait use on APS-C, but would be marvelous on FF, I wold think. I use it mostly for concert work, where my distance to subject is by necessity a little longer than one would ordinary choose for portraits. But if you don't mind need a few extra feet of working room, or prefer your portraits *really* tight (like many actors tend to like their head shots), it does indeed do a great job on APS-C. The alternative I'd consider would be the M85/2. but it's definitely more expensive - almost always over $200 or maybe a bit over $300. If you can swing it, that would be my recommendation for portraits on APS-C, though. Of course, there are also the newer Korean 85/1.4's, also not much over $200-$300 or so, but those are far too bulky for me.
