A couple of SDM questions

I haven't yet bought an SDM lens but the 16-50 is sort of grabbing my attention. However, I was hoping some folks here could clear up a couple of things related to the infamous motor failure:

1) For those with a failed motor, what happens if you mount it on a screwdrive-only body; does it af? I would only be using it with screwdrive for now since I have an istD and K100D.

2) I think I asked this before, but what happens if you block the SDM contacts on an SDM body? Does it just not focus at all with SDM lenses?

I'm personally a fan of screwdrive; the DA14 and DFA macros have an excellent implementation that is only a bit noisy but has nice manual focusing plus the ring doesn't turn in AF.
