Cheap old zooms or cheap new zooms better?

I need a telephoto zoom for my kit, but I have very little money to spend.
In the price basement of lenses, am I generally going to do better with a 1970s-vintage Pentax or a modern Tamron/Sigma?

Things I can't stand:
- Weird wide-angle distortion (excessive barrel or that God-awful Sigma mustache distortion)
- Excessive vignetting
Things I can:
- Less-than-great sharpness
- Some chromatic aberration

With these ridiculous demands, can anyone recommend me a particular lens from either era?

I was just testing a couple of old lenses on my istD. The Kiron 28-105 and 80-200s were both tack sharp. Both M lenses. My 70-210 was slightly softer.
Both of my DA kit lenses are pretty sharp but no sharper than the Kirons.
My best lens is a Zeiss M42 135, 3.5. It is just plain beautiful.

Cheers

I have a Sigma 70-300mm DG APO lens and it is a well worth the money.

All the moon shots on page one were taken with this lens.
