The F50 1.7 has a felt damper.

This damper become poluted with grease/dust leading to binding and grittiness when focused.

I quick and dirty solution my work .

sit the lens flat on a surface (very important so as no to spill liquid onto lens elements)
wholst rotating the focus mechanism flood the crack with a hi class evaporating degreasant liquid (not to much but enough to run through)
slowly the AF shoudl free up as the dust and grease is flushed.

Do this wrong and liquid will run over the elelments leaving a residue when evapourated , you will then need to stip and clean the lens
On the plus side that only other soltuion to the the above is strip and clean lens so yo ulose nothing.

I followed your advice. The focusing ring was very free and there was no noise.
I then put it back on the camera. The grinding noise was gone. I dont know if it was fluke solution.
But I will keep my eye on it to see how it goes.

Thanks for the advice.
