Silly 55-300 speculation inquiry...

I admit that I hate these 'what if' or 'when will the new X be out' threads, but I'm going to ask anyway since I haven't seen this topic discussed recently. For once I am without a long tele zoom. I don't need something fast, but I need some good optically. I'm considering the Sigma APO 70-300 as it get above average reviews and only runs about $200. The DA55-300 seems like a logical choice, but more expensive (probably justified by performance). However, (and this is where my question comes in) will there be a WR 55-300 in the near future? It seems like a logical step for Pentax and I would surely be interested, even at an increased price. Has this been discussed? Any recent rumors?

One way or another I wouldn't base purchases on rumours! If you need the lens now, get it now. If you don't then hang in there until a lens is released that you do need. Sorry, that's likely not what you wanted to hear!

I am not much of a tele guy, but find the DA55-300 to be decent. It does have that Pentax rendering.

Oh, here's a thread with some DA55-300 shots. The middle three are with that lens. Quite extensive PP has been done, but you can see the lens captures enough detail to make that possible without lack of definition. It was a mid-overcast day so I likely was at 400 ISO.

Check out: last day at the old market.

I would go with the Pentax 55-300 as it doesn't cost that much more and is sharper on the longer end of the zoom. The Sigma is pretty good for the price and if your funds are limited, it will save you some $$. You mentioned the quality of the optics and weren't in a hurry to buy so why not save up a little for the Pentax? Also you might consider the Sigma 100-300 f/4 EX. It's up in the $1000 range but it's a highly regarded lens.

The 55-300mm extends while zooming and I'm thinking that would make WR difficult or impossible. It's a nice lens, though.

I believe the 50-200 extends as well. so if WR was achieved in the DA50-200, then why not for the 55-300.

Thanks for the responses here. I am pretty familiar with all the pluses and minuses of the compact (and budget) tele zooms. I wasn't so much interested in a buy this or buy that, just curious if anyone has heard something about a possible 55-300 WR. I hadn't.

I really don't need a long tele, just prefer to have one for the rare occasions I may want to put it use. I like the idea of something relatively compact and am willing to give up fast glass to save space and weight.

I have had some good fast glass with Pentax - Sigma 70-200 F2.8 HSM, Sigma 100-300 F4.0 and while they are fantastic lenses, they are quite large and heavy. I came to the realization that for the amount of time I use them, it's not worth having something so large (and expensive). My money was better spent on some primes.

Thanks again. Perhaps I will stick with the cheap and relatively good 50-200 (although it is a little on the short side).

Then I'm wrong (not the first time ;~)

They are indeed--which is why the 55-300mm has a place in my line up.

No, I don't but when the post mentions quality optics and willing to wait, why not save up for it? I'm too much of the impatient type so I'm using the 70-300 and getting by but would much rather have the 100-300. Who wouldn't?
