Which macro lens to take on trip...

Everyone,

Have a trip coming up to Sanibel Island and will have the opportunity to take some outstanding floral shots. I have limited space in the bag and not sure which lens to take. I have the 100mm, 50mm and 35mm macro lenses. If you had limited space what would you take? I'm planning to take my 18-250 as the walk around lens and I'm taking my FA*300 for the nature shots so the bag is pretty well full except for a macro lens.
Would greatly appreciate everyone's thoughts...

Thanks.

take the 100mm

it gives you the best working distance for the same magnification ratio.

My vote is for the 100mm macro, but the 35 and 50 are ok...what really shocks me is your choice of taking the 18-250 with you. It's a great lens, I used to have one, but when you have lenses like the DA21, FA43 and the 16-50 that lens is an odd choice and massively inferior to these. I will take the DA21, FA43 and the 100 macro, and if you want the 300 telephoto or if you want to compromise a bit and not change lenses much, then leave the 21 and 43 and take the 16-50. I think the 18-250 is a mistake.

P.S: I just got the Pentax FA 80-320 a few days back, haven't shot with it yet, except for some test shots...how do you like yours?

Which lens

You might be right maybe I should re-think the lenses. I know the 16-50 is a great lens, but I was thinking the range in between the 50mm and up to the 300mm I was losing that in between piece. I guess I go for the 18-250 due to range and for a general use lens it's not bad. I really want to take my primes but was concerned about taking to much.
I keep going back and forth what to take and not to take.
As far as the 80-320 goes it's a really nice lens. I purchased it used from B&H and have been very happy with it. I do wish it's f range was bit better

Given that these three lenses are excellent, I would base my choice on

1-size: if it's an issue, the descision is made for you

2-use : take the one you prefer using for macro. You must have a personal favorite

3-other uses : which one will complement your other lenses better, and suit your style, for non-macro photography?

I personally would find the 100 limiting, and for flowers being close to the subject is not a problem, so that argument isn't a strong one. For bugs it would be different.

You have quite a few really nice lenses, I understand why you're asking for opinions!!!!

I've got both the 35mm and 100mm macros and it's hard to choose. When I went to Europe I went with my DA 17-70mm, DA 55-300mm (that I didn't use much) and my 35mm macro.
I chose the 35mm because I can use it as a walkaround as well when I don't want to lugg around the 17-70mm. In the small streets it's more discreet I find! But then again this is my opinion.

With what I see you've got, I'd go with 4 lenses, 21mm, 50mm, 100mm and the 300mm. With those you'd be covered for macro, short and long telephoto and wide angle and your bag would not be too heavy, you can blame the weight on the 300mm

Let us know what you decide!

Take care,
MPOC
