What about it? It's a f/4-5.6 lens that costs $100. The others are f/2.8 constant lenses that cost about $700.

Well......from what i've been reading the Tamron an Sigma are good lenses, and a few fellow pentaxians have suggested tha the Pentax DA 55-200 wasn't a bad lens to consider, very crisp and clean for the bucks. of course if the bucks aint a problem...go for it

I think from all I've read of the 55-200mm, it's a decent lens, and you're likely to have less chance of a mechanical problem with it (ironic that the pricey lenses keep having faults yeah?). However, it's not in the same league optically I would guess, and it's slow maximum aperture makes it less useful for low light shooting (sports / interior shooting), and not as good for isolating your subject by using the shallow depth of field available from a fast lens like the two under consideration. The 55-200 sure is less bulky than these big boys though. It's really an unrelated lens - even though the focal lengths are so similar.

Thanks again Ash, DWB and others.
I'm off into town to try out both these lenses on my K20d. I rang up front and store is fine with me testing the lens first b4 making a decision. As mentioned in my previous post; I want a reliable AF system and that is what I will be testing for.
However, I must admit i'm currently swayed a bit towards the Tamron at the moment, but we'll see. I'll keep you guys posted.

how do the EX DG and non-DG compare to each other and the tamron? Do those older versions have the AF speed of the HSM?
Anyone have experience with these?

To make sure we'll all on the same page here, I believe we're referring to the non-Macro versions of the Sigma. These are hard to find, and new I believe they cost around $1300 US. I did find one online a while back, but I hesitated as the price wasn't that much less than the Tamron, new. Eventually, someone did buy it (it wasn't me). I've never used one myself but the IQ is said to be excellent.

Only the newest version of the Sigma 70-200 has HSM - the older versions (including the original Macro) do not.
