SMA Pentax-A 1:1.7 50mm or SMC Pentax M 1:1.7 50 mm

Going to sell one. Which one to keep? The "M" feels like a little more substantial lens in terms of glass, but the IQ seems about the same. Obviously the "A" is more convenient in Av mode.

I'm given to understand that it's the same lens in optical terms, just with some plastic parts and the Auto setting. If you have to part with one I'd be inclined to sell the M and keep the A.

It's the same glass (same optical design); the difference is just in the body. The M is indeed more substantial (the A has issues with its aperture ring), but for the extra capability - not just Av mode, but also ability to use use PTTL flash, and full time live metering in M mode - I'd keep the A.

Keep in mind that the M probably has a smoother focusing ring. I do not have the M50/1.7, but judging from my M28/2.8, the M is much nicer that my A50/1.7.

I'd say you have to choose between better compatibility or better focusing. ; )

Sure, the A makes the most logical sense to keep. But in the hand, it's all about the M. No comparison.

You might just have a damaged/defective A50/1.7. I don't notice any difference in focusing between the M50/1.7 and A50/1.7.

sometimes you cant be bothered playing with the exposure, you just want it to work. there should be no difference optically

I've got an M 1.4, so I think the M1.7 is off the the marketplace forum.
