FA 43 or DA 35 Macro

Hi All,

I was swapping between FA 43 and DA 35 Macro.

I can get them in similar price. 43 at 500 USD and 35 at 450 USD.

I know they have different usage but the problem is that I don't have a lot of money to purchase a lot of lens recently.

Which one will be better? Landscape is needed.

Best regards,
Paolo

The 43 @ 500 sounds like a better deal, but if you want landscape, then you need something wider. 35 frankly won't cut it much either, but the're will be a big difference in those 7mm.

I sold my DA35 and kept my FA43. If you shoot both film and digital, then the FA. The DA was a great lens..but I didn't like the macro. Some find the FAs a little flat with the samsung sensor (K20d and K7). So it depends on what you are looking for.

Thanks you, both.

Your suggestion is useful, really.

I'm try to use the kit lens to estimate the difference between 43 and 35.

How about the sharpness and color?

I can image 43 will be better but i'm not sure how much.

43 has a better bokeh but slower focusing. sharpness's high enough with both lenses.
if you'll use it with FF oneday - only 43.
for landscapes on the crop you'll be limited less with 35 (for me "comfortable" landscape angle on crop would be 15 to 21mm...

i did read that the 35 does just about work on ff - go to the lens review database and someone tested it and seems the results aren't bad

since i haven't used either of these lens personally thought thats about all i can add

I think a lot depends on what you want to shoot. The DA 35 is a great macro lens that also can be used as a walk around lens. J Sherman has a long thread with examples. The FA 43 doesn't have a macro feature, but probably focuses faster (I don't own it). As far as sharpness, I think you would be hard pressed to see differences in real life situations, the DA is awfully sharp and contrasty in its own way.

Thanks all.

After all, I chose FA 43mm just because DA 35mm was selt off.

I still haven't a good chance to do some test. Maybe, tomorrow.

With simple test, It is not so sharp at 1.9 even 2.2. Even not as good as my previous lens A50 F1.7.

Anyway, the build is excellent.

Check for front or backfocusing I have this lens and is sharp enough wide open.
As a matter of interest can you check where the lens is made? Is it made in Japan or Assembled in Vietnam?

With my further trial, I was confirmed that FA43 is not so sharp at 1.9, 2.0, 2.2.
2.5 is acceptable and 2.8 will be OK.

With the apeture get smaller, the quality increase significantly.

I will test some landscape on weekend.

FA 43 Ltd vs DA 35 Ltd

You can compare the resolution test from these 2 lenses here at Photozone:

FA 43 Ltd Lens Test

DA 35 Ltd Lens Test

The FA 43 Ltd has more resolution compared to DA 35 even at it's best f/5.6
My FA 43Ltd is very sharp but I don't have DA 35 Macro to compare with.
What I do is mounting FA 43 on a Vivitar 2x Macro TC and it's amazingly sharp.
None of my other lenses can come close to that combo except maybe my FA 50mm macro (subjective test).
I don't think there are that many lenses w/ Pentax mount that are as sharp as FA43 except for those dedicated macro lenses.

Maybe one day I'll pick up a DA 35 and compare the result.

Wow,

Thanks for the MTF diagram.

Where did you get Them?

I just want to know more. Other lens even other brand.

I know that MTF doesn't mean everything but it's always a good reference.

Voe

I just got myself a FA43... purchased from B&H made in Japan.

Tests so far are very impressive especially 2.2 onwards

Dont know why I waited so long to get the third Ltd to my collection

Here is some example I photoed.

A50:

My Cat:

Unknown tree in our neibourhood

My Wall-E

Then, Here is 43mm limited.

My lazy cat.

Cherry 3000 Blue~

Unknow plant beside my office windows.

All of them was shot at f2.8 and I didn't PS them.

It seemed that A50 is comparible to 43mm limited with 1/10 price.

Of course, manual focus.
