Landscape Lens options

Hi guys,

Still swithering over a move from Olympus to Pentax, have had a few issues with my Olympus mainly that I find it too small to hold comfortably and that I'm struggling to get wide enough lenses with the 2x crop factor, just wondering what K Mount lenses people her are using for landscape shots.

Hi Chris.
You might be keen on handling a K20D with grip - it's a robust and easy to handle combination, big or small hands.

For landscapes, my choice is the Pentax DA 12-24 f/4 for ultra-wide or DA* 16-50 f/2.8 for wide-normal scenes. A cheaper (but not necessarily worse quality) option to the 16-50 is the DA 16-45 f/4

I guess it all depends.....

How wide do you really need for your type of shots? I've used the sigma 10-20mm with nice results. Other zooms in that range are the Pentax 12-24, and Tamrons 10-24mm Numerous threads here discussing each of these zooms.

If you are looking for primes, there are several to choose from. Da 21...the newer 15mm too. I've also used the FA31mm for those not needing something really wide....

So yea, lots of options out there....and I haven't even mentioned older glass....lots of options there.

Well if I buy the kit I've reserved the first lens I have will be the Samsung 16-45 which seems a good start but probably not wide enough for me, the Sigma 10-20 could be an option or perhaps even the 12-24 but it seems very very expensive unfortunately
What older glass should I be looking out for?

You won't find much older glass wider than 16mm worth using, unless, I suppose, you are specifically looking for fisheyes. There were a few versions of a 15/3.5 from Pentax, but it's pretty unlikely they'd provide any advantage at all over the DA15 or the DA12-24.

BTW, I'm assuming you know what you are doing here and know your own preferences, but most landscape phoography is done at focal lengths nowhere near as wide as 16mm (APS-C). Lots of people like the DA21 for landscape. I find my M28/2.8 is my favorite landscape lens overall. I'm looking forward to doing more with my DA15, but I rather doubt I'll ever end up using it as often as the 28.

I was referring of the 24-28-35 range...

Sigma makes the super-wide, the mini-wide, both of which can be had for reasonable $$. Takumar also has that range covered with some fairly inexpensive lenses.

There is also a thread in the lens section about the vivitar 28mm as a replacement for the fa31. Lots of discussion there, and vivitar 28's can be also be found cheap.

That should be a nice starting point at least.....
