What is a "defective" lens?

I hear all the time about the 3rd party lens manufactures and their not so great quality control.

so what is a poor lens and how would you know? let say that the lens is a very good one and you just got one of those "bad" ones off the assembly line that wasn't caught by quality control

doesn't focus fast enough?

not as sharp? (but how would you compare sharpness if you don't also have a "good" lens to compare it with)

loose build?

any input would be much appreciated because I am going for a sigma 17-70 and am not sure what to look for.

thanks to all!!!

I think you named most of the issues to look out for.

Perhaps going to a camera store to get an idea of what the lens should be?

The world of the Minolta mount digital SLR - (although a minolta site) has a very good compiled lens database
There's also
FM Reviews - Main Index

There's a Sigma section. Although the users reviewing lenses are not Pentax owners, at least you get an idea of the quality of the lens.
