I have the FA-J 70-300mm lens, which is similar to the DA L in many ways (plastic mount, no quick shift) and probably not as good optically. As a newbie, you won't go wrong with the DA L.

Not IF (internal focus) too so if you mount a Polarizing filter it will go round and round..and round..

The only thing that would make me pick the 50-200 over the 55-300mm would be the WR.

And to be clear, that's only on the WR version, not the version optionally sold in the kit with the K-x or the regular version.

If one is buying the K-x kit that has the two L zooms, this is kind of moot. Unless they turn around and sell the L's.

Yuk, You could never pay me enough to own a DAL lens.

I was so disappointed when I saw just how crippled the K-X and lens's were.

Sorry to dig up an old thread. But this thread came on top of google search results for differences between DA 55-300 and the DA L version.

Just wanted to point out (for future googlers) that this statement in the thread is not correct.

Btw what I was googling for, was whether the hoods for both are compatible. It looks like they are.
