I have all three DA*16-50, DA*50-135 & A 50/1.7
In order of sharpness at 50 mm, this is how I rate it:
1. A 50/1.7
2. DA* 50-135
3. DA* 16-50

Like everybody had said. Prime 50mm will beat a zoom. But you will be surprise to see how sharp the 50-135 is.
Let's put it this way, 2 nights ago I put my K20D on a Giottos 9360 tripod with Giottos head MH1300-657 which is overkill for this setup. I tried to test the sharpness between DA*50-135 and FA 77mm Ltd at f/2.8 f/4 and f/5.6, ISO 100.
The subject is the rattan box across the living room around 20 feet from the camera under a dim tungsten light condition (basically it only got a light from dining room light which is 10 feet away from the right side).
So it's a very very tough condition that is impossible to achieve sharp result handheld.
At f/2.8, the FA 77 slightly sharper than DA* 50-135
at f/4 and f/5.6, I cannot tell the difference.

Don't worry about BF or FF in this test because actually the purpose of that test is to calibrate my FA 77Ltd on my K20D

then again you could take a walk on the wild side and pick any of the 50 f1.2' eye is on the Cosina and the Pentax A 50/1.2, but the right deal on any of them and I will likely grab one. And from what I have seen stopped "down" to around f2 they are all pretty danged sharp. Plus there is the fun of f1.2!!!

We now return you to your regularly scheduled topic.

When I do get another SDM zoom, I think it would be the 50-135 over the 16-50 smply because there seems to be a pretty wide margin of other issues with the 16-50 as far as decentering and what have you. But once ya get a good copy, that is a GREAT leetle lens.

Olympus 50mm f2 macro is a very very sharp lens. On that note, all companies produce 50mm lenses very well and all are very sharp these days. Almost all have bad ugly bokeh regardless how bright they are.
