FA 50mm

What would be a typical use for a 50mm lens?

It's an excellent choice for portraits. I typically use the sigma 30mm for group candids, FA50 for torso length crops, and FA77 for head shots. The FA50 is also fairly well suited to food and product shots.

Other than portraits, it's typically pretty useful in an indoor or urban type of environment where you want a little bit of tele compression, but don't have much room to work with.

Ummm...

Low light
Portraits
Narrow Depth of Field
Doorstop
Hammer (well...not the FAs)
Taking pictures

50mm lenses are NOT good for
Listening to the radio
Using as scissors
Browsing the internet

Kinda like asking "Where should I drive my car?"

I...ME...personally...use 50mm a lot whether on the K10 or a film body. Others will argue to the death that a 30mm f/1.4 lens is way better with an APS-C sensor.

My advice would be to get one (or a cheaper M or A)...use it...if you don't like it, let it sit and come back or sell it. Most people will find a use for it at some time or another.

Remember that there are different FA50s (1.4, 1.7 etc) and they are quite different in character. Have a look at the lens reviews.

Find the humour in it... Doesn't need to be considered an insult.

OK, so it's a really basic noob question...
low-light situations, portraits, indoors (if you have some room to move), some landscapes, basically anything you can put your mind to (and fit in the frame )
