Need advice on a Tamron 28-75

I just received a Tamron 28-75 f/2.8 from an ebay purchase. It was described in excellent condition, but I'm a little concerned. The front barrel is definitely loose, and will move up/down/right/left with a distinct rattle when carrying the camera. The glass is good, and a few test shots show pretty good IQ (with a bit of front focus) wide open. All of my other zooms are pretty tight, with no lateral movement in the barrel.

Is this common in this model, or have I gotten a damaged or worn out lens?

It looks similar to the problem shown on this youtube video, but I'm not sure about trying to fix it until I know I want to keep it.

This is not normal--is the looseness restricted to the filter ring part of the barrel? Tamron backs their stuff with a generous 6-year warranty. I would call them if I were you, UNLESS, you can get the Ebay seller to make amends. Good luck and let us know what happens.

I took a look at the video. Might be worth trying if you feel comfortable doing it. I guess this would be my post if I bid another $5 higher that night

Fortunately, the seller was willing to take it back for a refund. I decided to go that way instead of risk repairing it myself. Better safe than sorry.

Sorry to hear it didn't work out, but glad he's taking it back.

It is an awesome lens. I had one for a Canon XTi a few years ago. The Sigma EX 24-70 is just as awesume..IQ wise. I almost got the Tamy again, but I wanted a bit wider one the short end.
Good luck in finding a good copy..Which won't be hard. The QC is pretty good with the SP line.
