I found a significant improvement at F3.2 and F3.5 so I rarely shot it at F2.8.

F3.5

This one is one of the rare images I took wide open at F2.8. I missed the focus on the birds eye slightly but you can see that part of the flower comes out in sharp focus.

I bought my A* 300mm f2.8 purely to use with the 1.4x-L and 2x-L teleconverters.
I don't think I actually have any shots taken at f2.8.

Pentax K10D, Pentax A* 300mm f2.8 (f4)

Pentax K10D, Pentax A* 300mm f2.8 and Pentax 2X-L Teleconverter. 600mm Handheld. (f5.6)

I'm thinking of 500/4.5 but now also on 300/2.8 with 1.4 and 2x converters for versatility. You all are to blame

Sigma 300/2.8 is a no brainer, just use their 1.4 and 2x converters.

Now, for FA 300/2.8 and besides the 1.7 from Pentax, and for autofocus which 1.4 and 2x should I use ? Anyone ?
(To use on k-7)

Nice photos, but wow, that is some serious CA and PF on that first one. I have recently aquired this lens, but due to the crazy weather have had few chances to use it.

I used the Tamron 1.4x ALL the time with mine and it was good. I also tried (borrowed) the Pentax AF1.7x and it was also very good. If I had kept the lens I would have bought the Pentax 1.7x.

Unfortunately since the camera is unaware of the tamron converter there is no exif information to identify which shots had the converter... also it does not accurately display your true aperture. With the Pentax 1.7 all of that information is preserved. As a result I KNOW I used the TC for all my surf shots but I don't always know the other times I used it so I have just shown you a couple of random surf photos.

Here's some shots with the tamron 1.4x

100% crop

So I actually did sell this lens and the reason I did is because I also have a Canon 1DmkIII and the Canon 1 series cameras can autofocus an F9 lens... therefore I can stack my Canon TC's (1.4x PLUS 2x = 840mm F9) and still maintain autofocus. Equivalent 35mm FOV for that setup is 1092mm

Thanks Kunik, also another question, if possible, ... did you use the lens with any 2x converter ? if so, which one and what were the results ?

Actually if Pentax had made a good 2x TC that would maintain AF I would have probably kept the lens. 300mm was usually too short for me but I couldn't afford the extra $5000 to get the 600 F4. So if I could have shot the 300mm with a 2x to get 600mm F5.6 I would have been happy.

That's a point in favor of the sigma, they have a 2x that autofocus the lens to 600/5.6.
I prefer the Pentax FA but I will have to find a 2x converter before I decide on it ...... Any hints ?

I'd be curious to see the results if anyone has tried stacking the 1.7x and 1.4x on the k-7 with ANY F2.8 lens. I'm pretty sure that the K-7 would autofocus that combo but I wonder if the image would look OK?
