300mm/2.8 images, only at 2.8

Can you show us your 300/2.8 images ? only at 2.8.

Any lens, like FA*300/2.8, Sigma 300/2.8 etc.

Thanks

Pentaxphotogallery has plenty of examples. The main thing about wide aperture tele lens is really for teleconverter use purpose really.

The bokeh difference between f2.8 and f4 are quite minimal in real life application. Hardly anyone could spot the difference that much.

The image rendering are often at f4 regardless.

I had a FA*300 f2.8 (sold my motorcycle to buy it) and it was soft even stopped down. I sent it in twice and pentax wouldn't touch it, they told me it was a film lens and may not work well on digital. I was pretty PO'ed and had to trade it, I can try to find my disc of images later. I had to get a canon 300mm, just got it last week and am very happy with it. I would have been happy to have my pentax lens adjusted, but they weren't willing (or capable) I would say be warned if you need service, you might not get it.

In my opinion Sigma is very sharp at f2.8 - in short distances like this one - probably about 3 meters

Pentax PENTAX K20D,Sigma 300mm f/2.8 EX APO
1/25s f/2.8 at 300.0mm iso100

Wow, very well indeed

Piotr, why did you choose Sigma instead of the Pentax one ?

btw - it was my first shot when Sigma arrives to my office

Answer is simple - I found a bargain - I didn't plan it but it was difficult to resist

It works very good with AF1.7X. 80% of storks from 2009 were taken with AF1.7X - Bociany Photo Gallery by Piotr Sobolewski at pbase.com

Did you try to correct focus adjustment in camera ? (k20 or k7 ?)

LensRentals.com - "This lens is soft" and other myths

soft lenses are usually miscalibrated bodies. my k10d shipped with the sensor miscalibrated, giving me 'soft' everything .. until i fixed it via debug menu (which became a firmware feature in later models ala k20d/k7/etc).

so .. pentax's decision to not screw up your FA* was the right decision. send the body with it next time if you feel the problem is a bad lens and not the body.

I sent the lens and the body, it was NOT a focus problem. I am capable of manual focus as I have done so for a long time.It was screwed up from the factory.

Sure it was... Cause you have the equipment to test for fault tolerance.

Yes, I have eyes and I had a FA*300mm f2.8 that sucked. I have plenty of files to prove it though it probably would do no good to show them as you seem to be convinced I'm somehow unable to tell if a lens is bad. If out of 4 or 500 pictures many on tripod using manual and auto-focus and different apertures I had one sharp image then maybe I would think I should just take up another hobby. As it was nothing was totally in focus at any distance, probably a minor adjustment in the lens, but Pentax CO blew me off and after two attempts at repair I had enough of it.
