For landscapes at f/8 or above, I'll use Liveview too, but I won't rely on it quite so much as portraits.
That is exactly what I do... I call it "cat's eye focus". it is the best way to know you have nailed the eyes.
Laying on my belly shooting thru some tall grass with an old 60-300 mf lenses wide open... Live view was the only way to nail the eyes...
