K-x and Tamron 17-50mm

Hello to everybody,

I am buying a DSLR camera to complement my Canon G-9

I read tons of reviews and decided to get Pentax K-x. But instead of getting kit lens 18-55/3.5-5.6 I'll take only K-x body and a Tamron lens:

TAMRON 17-50mm XR f/2.8 Di II LENS PENTAX

Since I have no previous experience with anything Pentax, I need your help.

Q1: is that lens compatible with the body?
Q2: is that lens any good?

Thx.

Good choice for Pentax K-x, I'm also considering one as upgrade for my old *istDS. But anyway, your first question. Yes, it is made for Pentax so it must be compatible
But I understand why you asked, because in other brand, some lenses can't be used by some bodies. Pentax is well known for its long list of compatible lenses so no worries K-x is beginner grade but it will fit all lenses that fit K-7, as far as I know.

Is it any good? No idea because I don't have one, but it has fixed 2.8 aperture so it shouldn't be bad IMHO

IT's a superb lens that is just as optically good as the Pentax DA* 16-50 that costs hundreds more.

there are some known quality control issues with the 17-50.
so make sure you buy at a shop, where they let you easily exchange the lens for another copy in the case you get a bad one.

other than that it seems to be a really nice lens ! (im considering buying this or the 28-75...)

if this is your first dSLR and lens is quite fast (2.8) you should be aware that w/ dSLR and phase detect autofocus regardless of the brand (lens or camera) you can have BF/FF situation - so w/ Kx you will need in advance know that there is a way to correct autofocus for a single lens... because there is always a chance your combo will have that problem... or it might have that problem under tungsten light vs daylight or vice versa... that is the life, it happens

I had this one in Nikon mount. It is considered at least as good as $1300 Nikon 17-55. If you get a less then perfect sample, just send it to Tamron for calibration. They provide 6-year warranty!

They go for about $300 used if you are willing to go that route...

When I bought my K20d over a year and a half ago, I had to pick my walk around lens too. I chose the Tammy 17-50mm and am delighted I did--it is a great lens, at a great price. You are going to be a very happy camper! Best.
