I'm not saying it can't be used, and of course, if it's your only prime, then of course you'll tend to use it a lot. But while to some extent I'm just stating my *own* opinion of the focal length, a brief perusal of past discussions will reveal tht it's actually a commonly shared opinion. Too long to be of much use for candids or interiors, on the short side for formal portraits, too short for most sport & stage performance (although to be sure it can used for most of those purposes, if not ideal). So unless you know up front that your tastes in focal length are unusual - that you'd be among those who tend to prefer this focal length to shorter or longer ones - I'd still recommend going cheap on the 50, to save money to put oward focal lengths you will use more often. Spend some time with zooms first to learn your own preferences. *If* you find you happen to like 50mm, then by all means, spend your money there - that's my advice. Otherwise., take advantage of the chance to go really cheap on the 50 and save your money for something else you might find more useful.
