Hi, got my FA50 f1.4 and wanted to get a lens hood to use with it.

I look at B&H and found these:

Anyone know if I can add a filter after adding one of these two hood?

I actually like the hood for FA35mm:

Did anyone know if this hood for FA35mm will work on FA50mm?

If anyone know any alternatives, please advise as well.

I'd go to eBay and search for '49mm tele hood'

I've bought both from itdigitals and heavystar

You can get a longer hood becasue of the cropped sensor. And they work quite well.

The hood from the FA 35mm is a 'bayonet' mount, and therefore won't attach to the FA 50mm.

You can use filters with both the round hood you linked above, and probably also with the square one. With the round hood, you just screw the hood on top of the filter.

I'd recommend the round hood, as it can be collapsed for easy transportation. I've used it several times

I bought an old after market, foldable rubber lens hood for mine at an older camera store that had some NOS lying around.

$ 5-10 as I recall ...works well.

Thanks konraDarnok for your suggestion, I did search ebay, but don't know which one will certainly work on the FA 50 without blocking the lens...

Thanks Adam, for telling me the 35mm hood will NOT work! I am more towards the round rubber hood, but wonder if it will offer protection (from hitting something hard) like the metal one?

I am satisfied with the resolution of this lens at wide open thus far... I wished I got into Pentax earlier when the prime lenses are still very affordable! Autofocus of FA50 is great..... I tried a M 501.4 before this and I cannot get the focus right - maybe because I am wearing glass. My gf have no problem doing manual focus with the M50 1.4 though.

Given that the lens' angle of view is affected by the 1.5x "crop factor" on a DSLR, shouldn't we try to use a hood designed for a 1.5x longer focal length for optimal coverage on our cameras ?

For some odd reason, both my DA 40 and DA 70 hoods work with FA 50 without significant (observable) vignetting.

Contrast is greatly improved if shooting under the bright sun or if the front element is in bright light. This lens has a serious problem with flare so a hood is highly recommended to shield the front of the lens from the bright lights.

Hmmm, not true. I have the lens and hood. It works like this: the hood screws on the lens, so you first screw your filter(s) to the lens and then the hood on the front of the filter. Almost all filters have front threads so this isn't a problem.

I'm a big fan of collapsible rubber hoods..... I use them on all of my lenses. Does double duty as a bumper also, preventing filter ring damage.

I think it is more complex than that.

According to fCalc (Shareware) software the Angle of View on APS-c using a 50mm lens at infinity is:

• Vertical = 18.96d
• Horizontal = 33.61d
• Diagonal = 38.08

On 35mm film, the numbers are:

• Vertical = 26.99d
• Horizontal = 39.61d
• Diagonal = 46.79

I wish I could sit down and calculate the lens hood edge intercept of a ray from the edge of the sensor plane - but then that's the problem with an English major - no math horsepower and every hood has a unique set of dimensions.

Does the F f1.7 also have this flare problem?

The reviewer seemed to say that adding the hood also improved sharpness without shooting in direct light as the lens is to close to the border of the body.
