Prices are in Euros

You forgot the Ks and Taks...

1 - if auto aperture is your thing.
2 - No....I wouldn't bother, although there is nothing wrong with this lens, especially if you are on a budget.
3 - Actually, I think it's the SMC Pentax M (they didn't make a non coated M series lens). I would probably go for this one as I prefer manual everything.

The Pentax-A is the only one that'll meter correctly on your K10d. M50/2 is not worth 60 euros. M50/1.4 is a great lens, but much more suitable on a film camera IMHO.

The Pentax-A is the best choice among these. Having the A position on the aperture ring is very useful. For example, using a flash is much easier, and using any mode other than M. You can get the other ones to work, but it's harder. It's also an excellent lens.

I voted for the M 1.4 as it's a beautiful lens in construction and image quality - I use this term carefully as the A 1.7 is reputedly slightly sharper, but the 1.4 just has something undefinable about it (and is half a stop faster).

Of course, I don't shoot with a crippled K-mount so I don't see much of the downsides to the M series! :P

The A50/1.7 has known issues with faulty aperture rings due to an internal plastic detent that fails, freezing the ring. Doesn't matter if you leave it on the A setting, but if you want to manually set aperture there is a risk. This only applies to the A50/1.7.

For portrait photography any of the 1.4 lenses - even the Takumars - will give you nicer bokeh at wider apertures, then equivalent sharpness from roughly f/4 on. The optical design of the 1/4's was optimized for edge blur and thin DoF at wide apertures.

For architecture, any of the 1.7's will give you a much flatter field and sharper than the 1.4's (especially in the corners) wider than f/4. DK what that would mean for automotive abstract.

Above f/2.8 they're all excellent. The M's are a pleasure to use.

I think you need the either -> SMC M-50/1.4 for portraits AND the M50/1.7 for architecture, or -> A50/1.4 for metering on digital cameras, but I voted for the M-50/1.4.

my 2 cents

M 50mm f2 is not worth the money.

You have a choice between A 1.7 and M 1.4.

The biggest advantage of the A lens is that you can record your aperture and you can use flash in P-TTL mode with good results.

In contrast, the M will give you larger aperture, which is useful in low light conditions.

M requires more patience. But I find that I rely less on the metering when shooting indoors. This is because light changes so fast.

i did the same, thinking it was 1.2 from your title.

personally, i don't ever use A lenses, so #1 wouldn't appeal to me more than a good f/1.4. How come no Takumars? they tend to be fairly available out there if you keep watching.
