Lenses that you opted to pass even when you have the cash for it !

ok, lemme start a thread which is somewhat anti-LBA. this is somewhat of an "oh darn, what a bummer. I coulda, shoulda, woulda bought it" sort of dilemma.

over the past few months, I had let slipped thru my fingers the chance to buy a:

1. FA 135/2.8
2. SMC Pentax K 300/4
3. Sigma 20-40/2.8
4. FA50/2.8
5. DA 21/3.2
6. DA 16-45/4
7. SMC K Pentax 400/5.6

man, that is quite a list of missed chances !

Had a lot of coulda... that didnt really pass should and woulda
-Bokina
-Sigma 20-40mm
-Pentax 18-35mm
-DFA 100mm
-DA 16-45

Did I regret it? Not really... I think I made the right decision in letting someone else that will surely use it get it instead I'll keep what I can use

whooops , forgot some more. and here they are:

8. M20/4 ( wasn't sure, contemplating on AF)
9. FA20/2.8 (just bought one lens recently. can't justify 2 purchases in a week, wife would kill me, lol)
10. FA24/2 ( Do I need you? Do I need you?)
11. FA20-35/4 ( I might need you, but you just got bought a day after)
12. Sigma AF 24/2.8 Wide II. (sold my old Sigma Wide II MF to purchase this one but eventually used the cash to purchase another lens instead).

I came very close to getting an FA 50 macro; the price was right and I'd like a dedicated macro lens but I just can't justify buying another 50mm. I already have 6 and only two of them (FA 50 f/1.4 and Super Tak 50 f/1.4) get used more than once or twice a year. I passed on a 50mm 1:1 Super Macro Takumar for the same reason.

Most of the other lenses I've skipped were on the high end of the price range I was willing to consider (105mm and 120mm Takumars, M 85mm f/2) came as part of a set I wasn't willing to break up and resell most of (35mm f/2 Takumar) or wouldn't get used enough to justify the purchase.

same reason here. can't seem to justify a 5th fast nifty 50mm lens in the mix.
though it is pretty tempting for a highly regarded lens, it could end up not being used often. the only reason that I could think of buying is, if I were a millionaire and add this to my rare and great Pentax lens collection.

I passed on a DA*60-250 because I thought its focal lengths overlapped too much with my other lenses. Still wondering about the road not taken.

DA 16-45 is the real killer. Could have had it for about $125 less than it's cheapest price now, which is nearly $225 less than average.

Years ago the Pentax rep (told you it was years ago) loaned me an 85 1.4, 135 1.8, and 300 2.8 lenses for a month. Could have bought them for pennies on the dollar. Didn't. Ouch.

Lately have passed on 16-50 2.8, 40 pancake, 50 macro, 50-135 2.8, 17-70, DA 300 f4, and 250-600. Probably should have bought the 250-600. Will most likely buy the 40 pancake (missed the earlier film version from both Pentax and Olympus OM). All above were Pentax lenses.

Also passed on the Sigma 50-500. It was fun to shoot. Nice lens, but its a Sigma, and my luck with those is abysmal.

thanks

DA 50-135

Oh so many... but my saddest story is the DA 50-135...

I have had two opportunities to buy this lens used for a very good price... but in the end I just could not pull the trigger because of the SDM issues. Sadly for me, owning this lens in perfect condition but with no warranty is just a risk I could not take.

Looking at all my photos, it would be the perfect weather sealed family shooter for me...

Come on Hoya, fix it!

I felt the exact same way as with you, this is the reason why I chose the Tamron 70-200 f/2.8 over another 50-135 f/2.8. This is also going to be the reason why I am going to choose either the Tamron 17-50 f/2.8 or 28-75 f/2.8 over the DA* 16-50, I could have a weather-sealed set but I just can't take the risks. All of these nice 50-135 in the marketplace lately for a good price but just can't take that risk.

Here you go Gus: ---> Link to alternative.

About $70 cheaper than the 50-135!

Regarding this thread - I assume these are really good deals that were passed up? Because with the exception of a couple lenses, all of these I've seen in this thread are available to buy now through ebay or various places, if you're willing to pay market value.

But passing up a really great deal? It's been a while for me... I'm sure there are some, but they're not coming to mind right now. Usually I just miss a deal because someone snatches it up first, but whenever I have the opportunity to grab a good lens at a great price, I take it, because I can always resell for just under market value or right at market value and get my money+ back if I'm not going to be shooting it enough to keep it.

Wait, I remember one - Back in Jan '08 (I think) I didn't buy a Vivitar Series-1 105 2.5 macro for $175. It was mint, but I was cowardly about the whole thing and didn't pull the trigger.

Since then I've manned-up, but the whole LBA thing doesn't work if you're not also willing to sell really good glass that you're not using to fund new purchases. Well, unless you're really budget-free , then you never have to sell anything, but if you're not, sacrifice is part of the game.

One obvious one comes to mind: an Ebay auction for a on film camera (don't remember which, but it hardly matters) that came with an M20/4, A50/2.8 Macro, and M150/3.5 (or it might have been the M120/2.8 - I can't recall). The auction went for just a couple of hundred, and any *one* of those lenses goes for that or more normally. I could have kept any one, perhaps even two, of the lenses made a profit on the deal. Damn!

Since at this point the M120/2.8 is really the only lens I have my eye on, I'm also a bit miffed I didn't bite when someone on this forum was selling a *never used* copy for under $200 - his/her father or grandfather had worked for Pentax and had a collection of relatively rare lenses still NIB.
