Confused: SMC Pentax-A 50mm F1.2

Going through the lens database, read reviews and saw the average price:

Pentax Lens Review and Specification Database - 50mm F1.2

Sure enough, the price hike as mentioned in the forum

Pentax A 50mm 1.2 lens on eBay (end time 11-Jan-10 05:11:41 GMT)

And the one have just impulsed purchased as a birthday gift to myself.

SMC Pentax-A 1:2 50mm Excellent condition on eBay (end time 13-Dec-09 15:42:06 GMT)

Am I missing something?

looks like you purchased this lens Pentax Lens Review and Specification Database - 50mm F2

It is a whole different class (in a non-positive way) than a f 1:1.2 lens unfortunately.

Unfortunately this is an all-too-common mistake in the ebay world.

The 50mm f1.2 lens has an aperture of 1:1.2 whereas the lens you purchased is the "50mm f2" or with a max aperture of 1:2.0.

Phew. Well, didn't pay a deal for it. Maybe I'll find a use for it. Thanks

I have the A 50mm f/2. Although not as fast or sought after as the f/1.2 of the f/1.7 it is a good lens and you got it for a reasonable price.

FYI, that $800 50/1.2 has been and will be listed for a long time because it's waaay over priced (~1.5x-2x typical selling price), even when considering the jump in price for some of the more sought after used lenses that has come as new lenses have also increased in price. Lower priced lenses do not apprear to have increased much in price because, well, there are a lot of them around.

it's a 1:2. don't worry, it's a common mistake and somewhat fault by Pentax of not giving a more obvious difference. an F2 print or 50/2 instead rather than 1:2 would had made it easily identifiable. btw, I fell for the same print during my switch to Pentax. never knew there was a 1.2 and a 1:2. because it was so cheap, I bought it. when the lens came, I was wondering how come the aperture ring starts at f2 and not 1.2. and why it had an "M" marking. did some reading and found out it wasn't a 1.2 but the cheapest and slowest fast 50mm by Pentax. gave it a try to see if it can work some magic but found out the lens wasn't good at large apertures and put it in a box. bought the real 50 1.2 (A version) a week later off eBay. the real thing costs real money but it's all worth it. beautiful bokeh, very bright wide open, has a soft-sharp effect at f1.2. moderately sharp from f2 to f5.6. and ultra-sharp at F8.

took out the 50/2 again some months ago for a final analysis. it is really soft. the 1.2 is way much more sharper at f2 than the 50/2. finally put the 50/2 lens into retirement.

things to look out for in identifying both lenses:

use pictures and close-hand inspection if necessary.

cosmetic differences between the 50/1.2 and the 50/2. the 50/1.2 is a bigger and longer lens. it has a filter ring size of 52mm and obviously bigger front elements as opposed to the 50/2 smaller and recessed front element and a 49mm filter size. 50/1.2 is heavier and have 2 versions, the "K" version (K is not printed but only identified as Pentax 50/1.2) and the other one is the "A" version.

You, as buyer are not the only that gets confused. A lot of sellers do get confused also. Listing the lens as f1.2 rather than f1:2!

I've seen some sellers list the Pentax-A 50mm f2.0 as an f1.2 along with the requisite price of the faster f1.2. Possible that it's an honest mistake by the seller but some buyers out there could get mighty pissed off.

However, most people who look for the faster f1.2 lens do know what to look and ask for.

And when I see that on eBay I report every one of them. I'm not convinced it's accidental in all cases, especially when I see a seller has a history of many past lens sales.

John/bluespearbone, now that you have a fast-50 A f/2, you need to let LBA take over and get a f/1.7 & f/1.4 as well. You need the whole set.

Get a reverse adapter and dedicate it to macro stuff. At typical mid-apertures (for good DOF) it works fine. You'll soon be snappin' bug's whiskers with the best of 'em.
