The Vivitar 400mm f/5.6 is a winner!

I just got the Vivitar 400mm f/5.6. The seller didn't make a penny on shipping at $12 (it was virtually that value stamped USPS Priority).

I shot at f/8 and f/11 and it was as sharp as my DA 50-200mm (at 200mm) at f/6.7 and f/8. I was highly impressed! Not bad for $120. Not bad at all! Glad I found a long prime that does the job, even if it's as long as my forearm (yikes!).

BTW, I took out my pitiful Tamron AF 28-300mm (model 185D) which looked like crap at 300mm in comparison (and 200mm still leaves much to be desired). I can't believe they make a lens that bad, but that's what I get for trying a 10.7x zoom.

Thank you everyone for the responses. I think I have a winner in the Vivitar 400mm f/5.6 for now, and maybe for a long time to come. I really don't see myself whipping out or walking around with this thing at all (unless I want to test the strength of my K-mount). The DA 50-200mm is more than adequate for most of my needs -- and this thing fills in the final gap for those very long shots.

Just like I found the DA 18-55mm "kit" lens does at the long end, complemented by a Zenitar 16mm fisheye on the APS-C sized sensor for about a 110 degree FOV (and not too much barrel distortion either).

I have the Opteka 500MM Mirror lens and get similar results

I have a Phoenix 100-400mm AF zoom, with push pull type of zooming.. but its a great long range lens on both my K100D and K10D.. relatively inexpensive also. I paid $225 for mine new on some website.

Glad you got a decent lens instead of a pretty paper weight Bryan. How about posting a shot or two with that bad boy in a few days or so? Again, congrats !

I'm going out to the Rhode Island Air National Guard airshow this weekend (I live in Orlando, but just work outside New York).
I'll see what I can catch with it.
